Finished, finished, finished.

More considered responses later, probably after I've had time to reflect. But for now...
Major spoilers beyond )

Dumbledore/Grindelwald: brilliant scholarship in the morning, world domination in the afternoon, and hot evil genius lovin' all night long!

(Sorry. Couldn't resist. But it was so obvious it stopped in my tracks while reading! Merry, golden-haired thief indeed!)

Hahaha!!
I'm glad now there isn't another book -- if there were, these two would be safely tucked away in nice het relationships quicker than you could say 'wandlore'.

The bit that took my breath away -- literally made me gasp -- was the letter. Such a love letter!

Yes. Yes, yes, yes to all of this. Especially Dumbledore/Grindelwald! They were meant to be, like Professor Xavier and Magneto.

don't they have divorce for people who get married at 19?

As JKR herself is the survivor of an unsuccesful early marriage, it surprises me that she doesn't see that in her own work. Blind spot much?

What's the betting that James Jr.'s middle name is Sirius?

But did you actually like the book? And did you read it on holiday?

Blind spot much?

Absolutely. Either that, or this is her ideal. Both notions are pretty odd, actually.

In fact, I did like it, very much. I waited until I got back from holiday to read it. Here, this will impress you: I didn't go online while I was away, even to check work email. Yes, it was a real vacation.

Oh, thank you. I'm back now but have been effectively off lj for a few weeks, being holed up in a miller's cottage in deepest Normandy for part of the month and having stupidly also signed up for a stint on crack_van this month -- the same month as I start a fairly large freelance job. You know I'm not good at that multitasking thing you do.

Normandy was fab, though -- we saw the Bayeux Tapestry and visited Omaha Beach, among other things. It was a revelation.

Normandy sounds wonderful! I am eagerly awaiting the time when the girls are old enough so that we can take longer plane trips with them, and we will go to Europe and rent villas or miller's cottages in various scenic locales. And the children will complain about the lack of cable TV and inadequate outlets for their video games, and I will force them to ride wobbly bicycles around "because it's what people DO here, now get on the danged thing!" What? They'll need material for therapy later in life, won't they?

You belong to a community called vintage_meat and you DIDN'T TELL ME? Were you afraid I'd think it was about how long to hang your venison out in the shed before it was properly aged? I mean, I did think that, but only for about 13 seconds.
