“You okay?”

Black Canary waved her off.  Her throat had been injured and she could hardly speak after that violent last round. “I’m fine,” she mouthed.

Catwoman looked more closely at the blonde’s right side just below the ribs, “You’re not fine!” she yelled, “You’re bleeding!”

“It’s…only a scratch,” Canary insisted, her voice barely audible.  She kept from looking into the worried eyes of the woman helping her stand.

Catwoman slid her goggles up to the top of her head and waited for those brilliant sapphires she’d come to trust with her life to look at her.   When Dinah did, Selina spoke with finality, “You’re not going out there again.”

“You fight great, Selina,” Dinah whispered as she stood up on her own.  She ignored the pain radiating from her side as well as Selina’s concerned expression, “But, I’m a great fighter.”

“Not that again,” Selina crossed her arms over her chest and playfully rolled her eyes.

Dinah placed her small hand on Selina’s shoulder, “I can’t do this alone and neither can you.”

Selina closed her eyes and nodded.  She always knew she would go out in a blaze of glory or a hail of bullets, she never imagined it would be both and that she’d have company.  She never thought she’d be Gotham’s last line of defense either, but there she was.  She took a deep breath and grabbed her whip, “Ready?”

Dinah smiled, “With you, always.”

They ran out from the side of the building, hands in tight fists eager to pummel, whip cracking through the air, powerful legs carrying them on.  They took half of the men down, but scores of bullets fell on them like cold winter rain.  Then it grew dark and the pain faded away.

A mission gone wrong is all they said.

The news left her reeling and unable to breath.  Her heart completely broken, hopes forever shattered.

Everything seemed wrong without Steve.  The clear, star-filled sky taunted her with its longevity.  The pregnant morning sun giving birth to a brand new day mocked her.  The ocean and surf reminded her of a life-long union she could never hope to have now.

Then, two weeks later that surprising mid afternoon call came.  Diana was in greater disbelief than she had been in before.  Even as the airplane touched down, the narrow door was pushed open, and Steve stepped out, she would not believe it.  She needed to touch him herself to be sure.

The Princess walked on steady legs until he was in her arms and she in his.  Her knees felt weak as she relished his warm embrace.  He stroked her hair, reviving her with his gentle touch. Her long fingers ran along the nape of his neck and it was then she realized the night sky, the morning sun, and the peaceful sand and sea were trying to reassure her-remind her-of all that was yet to come for her and her pilot.

She had worked hard.  So very hard.  She wanted this more than she’d ever wanted anything else and now, it was hers.

She was Robin.

She was Robin.  She wore the bright yellow, red, and green.  She stood atop Gotham with Batman at her side.

Her city-because it was more her city now than ever before-had welcomed her with open arms.   Scum quickly learned to fear her.  The mocking had stopped almost as soon as it started and everyone knew Batman & Robin were back full force.
It didn’t matter that she was a girl.  It didn’t matter who her father had been.  It didn’t matter what she had done.  None of it vanished or disappeared-it was still part of who she was-but it all went away while she wore that “R” on her chest.  Because being Robin made her magic.

Title: A New World
Characters: Wonder Woman, Superman
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 142
Disclaimer: DC owns.

After every horrible attack the world and the League had endured-near total decimation on both counts-only a very few remained.  Some would say they were the bravest, the strongest, but they knew better.  Superman and Wonder Woman didn’t fight harder or with more courage than their teammates, they were lucky, plain and simple.

When the smoke had cleared, they stood alone unable to count on or turn to anyone besides themselves.    Posters of the two lined the streets and they became symbols of the peoples' hope for a future...a very different one than anyone had ever anticipated, but a future nonetheless.
Since they were equals in every sense of the world, when they came together, desperate for what little remained of their past, no one judged or questioned them.  The world understood because it was trying to move on, too.
