Nightwing wielded them so perfectly, that the eskrima sticks he held in each hand seemed like extensions of his arms.  He back flipped easily with the intent to strike Robin’s head with them.  Robin blocked the attack with the aid of his bo staff, then swung his right leg around to hit the back of Nightwing’s knees as the former Robin tried to land upright.

Batman remained hidden as he watched his sons a rooftop away.  Dick moved with a beautiful grace very few possessed.  Leaping and tumbling with ease whenever he needed room to recover or in order to continue with his assault. Tim didn’t fight like Dick; his movements were quick, thoroughly thought out, and he struck with deadly precision.

Their “fight” continued until Nightwing reached out and pulled Robin into a headlock, mussing the younger vigilante’s hair.

“Hey! No fair!” Robin yelled as he tried to get out of the vice-like hold.

Nightwing laughed and released him, “You know what they say, all’s fair in love and war.”

Robin would have growled if only it wouldn’t have made him sound even more like his mentor.  Instead, he tried to placate the unruly hair and contemplated the best way to get back at Dick.

The corner of Batman’s lips turned upward.  It was a slow night and he was glad his protégés knew how to pass the time in a better manner than he.   But as he continued to watch Dick and Tim, that small smile soon turned into the usual frown that accompanied the cowl.

Having someone his age- a sister, a brother-during those god-awful days after his parents’ deaths could have made it somewhat easier.  He couldn’t help the envy that suddenly arose within him that Dick and Tim had each other and he had had no one.  Hidden deep in the recesses of his heart and mind, Bruce realized he resented them a little for it.  Ashamed, he looked away.

Bruce knew there was no reason to yearn for things past.  When he turned towards his sons again and saw a determined Robin chase a laughing Nightwing off the rooftop, Batman swore he’d never fail them and they’d have each other long after he was gone.
