Beast and Jean’s spaced themed segment had concluded.  Cyclops and Jubilee’s pirate adventure had only commenced when an explosion shook the entire structure.  The audience cheered thinking it was part of the entertainment.

“It’s him!” Mojo screamed, knowing only Longshot would dare cross him again, “Find him!”

Spiral waved her arms, became a blur, and disappeared.

“I won’t have a repeat of last time.  No one likes reruns,” Mojo laughed to himself.  He looked up at the large, clear containment chamber where the remaining X-men were trapped.  He smiled at them, “Time to take five!”

In the blink of an eye, the “stars” had disappeared and the crowd booed.

Rogue and Gambit found themselves in a room that probably wasn’t a room at all, but a cell like the one they had just been in.  There were no doors, no windows, and no visible way out.

“Ya think they’re okay, Gambit?”

“First we worry about getting outta here, chere, then we worry about de others, non?”  He felt around the walls expecting to find some kind of hidden, secret way out.  He shook his head then turned to Rogue again, “Gambit’s going to have to charge the wall.”

“Are ya crazy, Cajun?  This room is too dang small.”

They could probably lay down, but there would be little room to do anything else.  If she raised her hand over her head, she could touch the ceiling, “Ya would end up hurt in the blast.”

“Gambit be fine.  Now, stand back, chere.”

Rogue was about to stop him, when he staggered back from the wall himself.  He looked up at her and she could see the worry flash across his eyes.

“Power’s ain’t working,” he mumbled.

“Let me try,” Rogue said.  She did not wish to draw any unnecessary attention to them by the inevitable loud noise she would cause, but it seemed like the only option left.  She pulled back her arm ready to punch through the wall when she felt his fingers curl around her elbow.

“No, chere.  It ain’t only Gambit’s powers not working.  You punch dat wall, you break your hand.”

“So, we just wait?” she asked annoyed.

He grinned then, his eyes taking on a look that suddenly made her realize just what he had said.

“Dat’s one option.”

Mojo had anticipated their attempts at escaping and created the rooms accordingly with some sort of power inhibitor, but it meant something entirely different to them.

Rogue swallowed, “Gambit, Ah-”

“Shh, petite.  Just wanna try something.”

He was surprised at what his first thought had been once he realized their powers were negated.  Given the opportunity, Gambit always assumed that the first thing he’d want to do included Rogue lying naked underneath him.  Or, on top of him.  Instead, he took her right hand in his and smiled to reassure her.  His red eyes burned with intensity as he took his time peeling away her leather glove.

Her hand was so pale.

“Wait,” she pleaded.  She didn’t want to hurt him.

But he ignored her wondering if her skin was as soft as it looked.  He brought the trembling hand towards his lips and brushed a kiss against her knuckles.  Nothing.  No pull from her powers.  No loss of consciousness.  He closed his eyes and when he opened them again, the intense, penetrating gaze made her want to take a step back.

“You’re skins so soft, chere, like silk.”

He kissed the top of her hand fully, then her palm, and each individual digit.

“Like silk,” he repeated.

Rogue smiled at him.  He was actually touching her and she hadn’t absorbed him.  She couldn’t help the stirring of emotion that rose from deep inside her.

“All this time,” she began, her green eyes twinkling when he glanced up at her, “Ah figured you’ve be curious about other parts.”

“Don’t worry, chere,” he winked, “Gambit’s getting there.”

Fingers laced together, he pulled her against him.

How many times had she dreamt of this moment?  Gambit’s arms around her.  His red eyes full of love.  Nothing in the way of what they’ve wanted for so long.  It was almost too much and she felt she would burst with elation.

Her eyes fell closed as his lips touched hers.  Lips parting as he deepened the kiss.

“Chere.  Rogue,” he murmured as he kissed along her jaw.

She ran her fingers through his hair, along his handsome face.  It was like a dream.  The instant she thought it, she regretted it; a dream could not last.  And right on cue, a wall exploded open.

“Rogue.  Cajun.”  It was Wolverine.  “You coming?”

He stood on the other side of the wall.  Storm was behind him, using her control of powerful winds to keep Mojo’s guards from getting too close.  Apparently, outside the room, their powers would be back to normal.

She knew their time together could not possibly last and yet Rogue felt the sudden rush of tears at its short duration, but held them back.  She gave Gambit one last look, a quick peck on the lips, and stepped away from him.

Gambit walked behind her, not releasing her hand until she walked through the hole in the wall and back to reality.

“Your glove, chere,” he called after her as he walked through the hole himself.

She slipped the glove back on not for a moment missing the significance of the gesture.  Still, she smiled, if a bit sadly, and whispered, “Thank you, Remy.”  She didn’t get a chance to say anything else once Spiral appeared, something which she was secretly thankful for.  She knew if she attempted to say anything else, the tears would flow freely and there was no time to waste when the other X-men were still held captive and in danger.

Once they were all safely back in the mansion, she could replay and indulge in what had happened with Gambit.  Until then, though, Rogue flew wildly around the complex hitting everyone and everything as hard as she could hoping to get back home as quickly as possible.
