Leslie tries to reassure you. She tries to make you believe it wasn’t your fault. Holly and Slam say the same thing. Even Bruce does. But as much as you want to believe them, you don’t. You can’t. You know it’s your fault Maggie’s suffered like she has. You know that if you had not stolen from Black Mask or trusted Silvia none of it would have happened.
Maggie would be conscious. Her husband would be alive.
If you had only been better. Smarter. More. But the sad truth is you weren’t and you can’t help think that all those hateful insults and anger-fueled words-first coming from your drunken father and repeated constantly over the years-claiming you were worthless, were actually right.
There really is no point in your trying. It’s never helped. It’s never changed anything. So maybe it’s time you didn’t even bother. Maybe it’s time to stop trying to be something you’re not because you’re never going to be good enough anyway.
Maybe it’s time to give up.
You know that would be the easiest thing to do. You’ve seen it all your life. It’s all around you. Giving up and letting the world swallow you whole. The pain, overwhelming. The sense of loss, numbing. All of it crashing down on you like tidal wave after tidal wave, trying to drag you under.
Only thing is, you’ve had enough of it! You’ve clawed your way out before and you can do it again. Hell, the very least you could do it try.
But to surrender, to succumb… it is tempting. Alluring in a way nothing else has been in a long time… You know what you want to do, but you don’t know if you can do it. And facing that horrible truth hurts more than you ever imagined possible.
