I never knew anything about cooking either until I was forced to cook for myself, and I picked it up suprisingly well and am now quite good at it and enjoy it very much. Just start by following simple basic recipies and you'll learn the important stuff like how long to cook meat and at what temperature, how to prepare and season vegetables without overcooking, how to make perfect pasta, rice, and potatoes...then you can start experimenting and come up with good stuff on your own. There are lots of nice 'beginners' cookbooks, or you can just look for recipies online.

One of the easiest things you can do with chicken is take off the skin and cut the meat into bite-size pieces, then sautee it in a pan. You can add olive oil, soy/teryaki sauce, white wine, spices, lemon/orange juice, butter...whatever will taste good. (But don't necessarily mix everythig in that list together at once...). Even better, slice up some onions and/or garlic and sautee them in a little oil for a few minutes before you add the chicken. Onions always give everything great flavor. The chicken will turn white as it cooks, when you think it's done take out the biggest piece and cut it in half to make sure the middle is cooked.
