Using The Lord's Name In Vain

Nov 29, 2019 12:02

You're frustrated. You're angry. The situation is intolerable. You condemn it by declaring, "God damn it!"

You were told this is wrong. That using the Lord's name in vain is bad. To understand why it is such a horrible sin we need to understand God's intention for His creation and it's salvation.

Genesis 1, from the RSV Bible, emphasis mine:

3  And God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. 4   And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 10  God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 16 And God made the two great lights, the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night;  he made the stars also. 17  And God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 20  And God said, "Let the waters bring  forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth  across the firmament of the heavens."  21  And God said, "Let the waters bring  forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth  across the firmament of the heavens."   25 And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the cattle according to their kinds, and everything that creeps upon the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 27  So God created man in his own image, in  the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.  28  And God blessed them, and God said to  them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and  have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and  over every living thing that moves upon the earth." 31   And God saw everything that he had made,  and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was  morning, a sixth day.

The Earth, stars, planets, and universe are God's creation, and he made it good. He created Man and blessed him. God's whole creation is "very good".

God made all things in His wisdom.

Psalm 104:24                                  O LORD, how manifold are thy works! In  wisdom hast thou made them all; the earth is full of thy creatures.

The next verse shows God delights in his creation.

Psalm 104:31   May the glory of the LORD endure for ever, may the LORD rejoice in his works,

Psalm 148 shows that all Creation gives praise to God for He made it.

This is also seen in Psalm 19, verse 1

1  To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.  The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.

But evil entered the world through the jealousy of an archangel in an attempt to despoil it and claim it as his own.

Genesis, chapter 3:

1  Now the serpent was more subtle than any  other wild creature that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman,  "Did God say, 'You shall not eat of any tree of the garden'?"  2  And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden;  3 but God said, 'You shall not eat of the  fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you  touch it, lest you die.'" 4  But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not die. 5  For God knows that when you eat of it  your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and  evil."  6 So when the woman saw that the tree was  good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree  was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and  she also gave some to her husband, and he ate.

God redeemed the world through His son as famously quoted in the Gospel of John, chapter 3:

16 For God so loved the world that he gave  his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have  eternal life. 17 For God sent the Son into the world, not  to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. 18 He who believes in him is not condemned;  he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not  believed in the name of the only Son of God.

God's plan is to redeem His creation and not have anyone be condemned to Hell, as stated in 2 Peter 3:9:

9 The Lord is not slow about his promise  as some count slowness, but is forbearing toward you, not wishing that  any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

Hell is an eternity we choose but are not forced upon us by God.

Isaiah 59:1    Behold, the LORD's hand is not  shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2  but your iniquities have made a  separation between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face  from you so that he does not hear.

When we ask God to damn things we ask Him to literally hand His creation, which is good, and which He delights in, and belongs to Him, over to Satan. This is not His plan, and is directly against the Will of God and strengthens the enemy of God.
