My mother, a diabetic, has been having kidney problems (as diabetics often do). She sent me an update. I am letting her tell it to you:

"Here's the kidney transplant update:

Yesterday we got a call from my case worker at the Nephrology Clinic at Madigan Army Hospital. Her name is Janice and she is the head dialysis nurse. She said all my test results, with one exception, had arrived. They not sent the results of my pulmonary test to her.. Since I took that test on Dec 31st, we said WHAT??? She said she was ready to send my file off to the University of Washington Hospital and Walter Reed Army Hospital as soon as we finished talking. We asked her to wait until the Pulmonary test arrived. She agreed...so we called the Pulmonary Clinic down at Tacoma General and Richard kicked some butt....They apologized and swore they would fax it immediately. That afternoon, Janice called and told us that the report had arrived and that the COMPLETED files had been faxed to the two transplant hospitals. (One must realize that there were 21 procedures done on my little body, so there were lots of reports to gather. Including 14 tubes of blood and a note from my dentist????) Now we wait for 4 to 6 weeks for their decision as to whether or not I am healthy enough to be placed on the "Transplant Waiting List" for a kidney. IF I am placed on the waiting list, the current wait is "about three years." Unless someone is willing to offer a kidney, then I would immediately receive it.

If every one would offer up prayers and/cross their fingers, I would much appreciate it."

I have been looking into whether or not I can donate a kidney (because I am also a diabetic). My mother and I are the same blood type. My only other sibling, Chris, has a different blood type (the same as my Dad's.)

I called her to ask if I could put this on my LiveJournal, because she is a very private person. She had another update. Originally, she was not a candidate for dialysis because the vein in her arm wasn't big enough (following a surgery to enlarge it). There are a few branches leading off the vein in her right arm and, in theory, if she has another surgery to tie off the branches that will increase the flow in the main vein (if I understand the procedure correctly). That would, in theory, make dialysis possible and give her more time to come up on the waiting list...

Fingers, toes, and eyes crossed!

mom
