Prompt 04 - Voting.

May 05, 2008 15:33

The following people either requested byes or did not submit drabbles, so byes have been used for them: clinicallybored.

You can see how many byes you have left HERE.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU READ THE RULES CAREFULLY. If you do not vote properly, I CANNOT count your vote.

VOTING RULES:
> Voting will last approximately 48 hours. The results will go up on Tuesday May 6th, around 5 PM (EST). (Wednesday May 6th, 9am NZ time) You are not required to vote, but it would definitely be appreciated.

> You do not need to be a participant to vote.

> Vote for your LEAST FAVOURITE (or lesser quality) drabble. Vote according to the quality of the drabble, NOT personal style preferences. (Keep the words "I don't like..." out of your votes. We want valid reasons based on actual quality.) Please try to be unbiased in your votes. Keep in mind that the writers will probably be reading the reasons for your vote. Try to be constructive in your criticism, rather than saying that the drabble sucks.

> Comment to this post with your vote for ONE (1) LEAST LIKED drabble. With this vote, you MUST provide a reason for your vote. If you do not provide an explanation as to why you've voted the drabble off, your vote WILL NOT be counted. If I find that your reasoning is biased toward an individual writer or an individual style you may not like, your vote will NOT be counted. Comments are screened, and you will have the option to view the comments your drabble received after the voting is over. They will remain anonymous.

> After you vote for the one lesser quality drabble, you'll be voting for your ONE FAVORITE DRABBLE. You don't have to give a reason, although you can if you like. ONLY CHOOSE ONE FAVORITE.

Here's two examples of how to vote:
#05 - The unusual tense usage is distracting.
or perhaps
#01 - Characterisation could be improved; Marian is unlikely to use Southern slang.

The prompt can also be considered - how skillfully did the writer respond to it?

FAVORITE
#02

And the form (just copy and paste what's in the box, replace the #00's with the correct numbers, and replace 'Reason' with the explanation for your vote).

Voting Off:
#00 - Reason

Favorite:
#00 - Reason (providing an explanation is optional, but you must choose a favorite.)

DRABBLE 01

Djaq felt her heart beat faster as Dan Scarlett’s voice rose to be heard by everyone present. The man was brave, she had to give him that, he knew what was right and wrong, but he was also bringing the Sheriff’s attention to them. She scattered with the rest of the outlaws

"Like father, like son." She was thinking when Dan’s voice was suddenly cut short. She spun around to look and she thought her heart was going to break when she saw the devastated look on Will’s face as Dan collapsed.

His expression suddenly changed and she felt her heart begin to race with fear. She saw him struggling against first John then John and Robin. Even those two between them could not hold him back.

"Will!" She called to get his attention, as she rushed over to him. She laid her hand on his chest just over his heart and she could feel it pounding with rage. At her touch, he stopped struggling immediately. His head whipped around to look at her and their eyes locked. She then noticed that their hearts were beating exactly in time with each other. They were synchronised perfectly.

DRABBLE 02

Djaq put her fingers to the baby’s chest to gauge the heartbeat, and tried to remember what this particular type of weak pulse meant. Most of Djaq’s training came from the battlefield. But she thought her physician’s skills could bring more solace to Nottingham’s poor than her swordsmanship, and Robin agreed. Besides, if she was to settle here, she would have to learn a more domestic form of medicine.

The thing was, babies died, all the time, and there wasn’t much any healer could do. Measles, or even a cold, would kill them. They’d smother in their sleep, or crawl too close to the fire. Djaq had already learned to harden herself against the constant loss.

But this case came down to the Sheriff’s greed. Because this little girl was starving. Her mother hadn’t eaten enough while pregnant, so she was born too small. And now her mother still didn’t have enough to eat, so neither did she. Her papery skin was drawn tight across her face, making her look more like an old man than an infant.

Suddenly the baby gasped and fluttered her eyes. Djaq touched her chest again.

This time, Djaq felt nothing.

DRABBLE 03
Still

When Marian was small, she'd climb onto her father's lap and curl into his chest. She would press her ear against his ribcage and listen for the slow, steady thud of his heart, a strong and soothing sound that calmed her to sleep in the weeks after her mother's death.

The absence of this sound, the stillness under her palm, was the confirmation of her father's death, not stammered words or ashen skin. It was the kick in the gut that that bowled her over and brought feelings of violent intensity crashing down upon her.

It was later, when she was curled along Robin's back against the chill of the forest night, that the fear of a young child once again overcame her. The axis around which her life had turned--though more distantly of late--had been ripped away, and she felt as if she were about to spin out of control. That steadiness she wanted most right now-her father's strong embrace, her hand tucked against her cheek feeling his love, his life--was no more.

That's all, folks.
