It’s About the Thumbnail

Director John August talks about the behind-the-scenes decisions that go into the making of a DVD, in regard to his film The Nines. The bit I found especially interesting was the section on the marketing questions driving the cover design.

Of particular salience to the hobby game biz is the “it must be recognizable at Amazon’s smallest thumbnail size” dictum. Back in the day, I used to think about this in retail store terms-that a cover has to present a clear and attractive idea when you see it on a shelf from six feet away. But the same design principles apply to the web site thumbnail.
