When I awoke the next morning...
The young Dick Grayson had almost expected to wake up in that small bed, not entirely too far away from where his parents always slept-- but much to his disappointment, they weren't there. Instead, he awoke in a mostly foreign room: soft-teal walls, tan carpet and a bed that was much different than his old bed. It always took him a minute to realize he was now an orphan since two months ago, and some mornings, he would have much rather thrown his face back into his pillow and forced himself to go back to sleep... but not this morning.
This morning, an alarm went off in the back of his head. 'Something exciting is going to happen today,' it said. If one thing was for certain, Dick had learned that he tended to have good instinct-- so he trusted it. Though, when he slid out of the bed and went down to eat breakfast, he was sure nothing felt exciting. It just felt like any other day, he decided when he sat down, poking idly at his food after he'd gotten it. Just like any other day. Wanting to make Zucco pay, and missing Mom and Dad, and school...
And then the voice of Sister Mary Elizabeth broke the boy from his thoughts. "Oh, Richard. We've just received a call from someone who is interested in making you his ward," she told him with a gentle smile as she strode over.
"Really?" he asked, his brows elevating in surprise and curiosity. "Who is it, Sister?"
"Bruce Wayne," she responded, sitting down beside the young Grayson.
Just hearing the name caused his blue eyes to widen greatly and him to mouth the word 'whoa'. He'd heard he was a millionaire and just the thought of being adopted by a rich man surprised the young boy. Dick was pretty sure he wasn't anything special and Mr. Wayne could have any kid he wanted. Yet, out of all the orphan kids in Gotham City, he chose the boy that had only been in the city for two months atleast. Still, he found himself anxious to meet the famous Bruce Wayne-- he had to be great!
"Mr. Pennyworth, his butler, will be here tonight to pick you up," the sister said, resting a hand on his shoulder, "so be ready."
All Dick could do was nod at her with eyes still wide. His instincts had been right in the long run-- something exciting did happen.
