Apples to Apples is probably our niece Hallie's favorite game. When we visited her family in Oregon awhile ago I made the end of the game more fun by saying that the adjectives on the Green cards that each player had won could be used as comments on their personality. "Oh look! According to the cards I got this game, I'm Poisonous, Dazzling, Absurd, Vicious and Sensitive!"
This weekend I skipped the Apples to Apples game, preferring to do a little work in my study downstairs. When I walked into the game midway through I discovered that my brother's family has taken the use of the Green cards one step further. Now they're not just using the adjectives on the cards as final comments on their personality--they're having fun acting and talking like the Green cards they win during play.
While I watched my brother Eric was having way too much fun being Corrupt. He kept giving ostensibly neutral but subtly weighted advice, especially to younger members of the table who respected his opinion. Meanwhile Brenda had started the game by winning the cards Perfect and Diligent and was then laughing about whether she really wanted to win some of the nastier cards that would force her to be less pleasant. Of course Hallie had a peach of time acquiring as many nasty cards as she could get, glorying in Foul and its cousins.
I'd gotten a little tired of Apples to Apples but I'm looking forward to playing again with this touch of light improv roleplaying.
