It's got to be John Carpenter's original Halloween.  It is masterfully made for a low budget film and transcends genre; not to mention, it jumpstarted Jamie Lee Curtis' career.  "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult in the soundtrack isn't too shabby either.
