I was sitting at work this morning, having just completed an emergency fix to a database and not really feeling like doing anything else, when I suddenly got an urge to look at the "
Vertigo - Then and Now" website again. I spent the next 90 or so minutes looking at the pictures, then following a link to
mistersf.com and looking at all sorts of stuff there. Wow. This may be Heresy to say, but 1958 SF had some nice views without all the trees in the way. The efforts over the past 50 years to "beautify" urban areas with trees has led to hindering panoramic vistas and blocking stunning architectural detail.
I wish I had found the mistersf site before my trip. It would have helped me decide on some spots to see during my trip. Oh well, that's what "Next Time" is for. For my next trip, I also need to invest in a Muni map so that I will (a) have a map with me, and (b) know what busses to take to get there. If I had had a map with me on the day i walked up Nob & Russian hills, I would have known that I was only a few blocks away from the famous part of Lombard St and continued my torture for just a bit longer, instead of just hopping on the bus back to Market St. Also, next year, I need to do a cost analysis of the regular weekly Muni pass and the 7-day passport (which includes riding on the cable cars).
