Convenience vs cost
Well, I just made a reservation at the Marriott for the piping conference. The benefits of being in the same hotel as the conference versus staying with someone nearby were in favor of the hotel. Since workshop sessions start at 8:30 on Saturday and 9:00 on Sunday, it would just be too much of a hassle to wake my sorry ass up early enough to drive to the hotel. This way, also, I won't be beholden to anyone for knowing what time I'd be at their place, etc.
