A question for the Brits on my list
We've been watching The Vicar of Dibley, and one episode has the foul-mouthed farmer Owen giving up swearing for Lent. I guess British TV doesn't allow "fuck" or "shit" (or "shite"), since I've never heard them on any of the comedies we get on this side of the pond. But they do use "arse", "bloody" and "bugger".
My question is: Just how shocking/offensive is the word "bloody"? Do churchgoers get offended? Do old ladies blush? Do mothers cover the ears of their children?
Here in the States many of us (usually anglophiles) will use the word, but it doesn't have the social reference, so it's mostly a meaningless invective.
Also, who the hell are Richard and Judy? Dawn French seems to make fun of them a lot.
