… … …

General John Sheppard let out an exasperated sigh before turning his full attention to the man seated to his immediate left. “Rodney, we’ve been over this. Three times, now.”

“Yes, but obviously since I haven’t brought you around to my way of thinking yet, it bears repeating,” Rodney shot back. Across from him, Jennifer Keller suppressed a giggle, which Rodney pointedly ignored. “I really don’t think it’s a good idea letting these recruits - these raw recruits - to run free on Atlantis.”

“Okay, first of all, nobody’s going to be ‘running free,’” John pointed out, air quotes and all. “These are trained military personnel. Second, all of them have at least six weeks off-world experience; any less and General O’Neill wouldn’t have signed off on this. And third…” At this, he leaned back in his chair, folded his arms across his chest, and fixed his partner with a pointed look. “Don’t you think you’re being a little hypocritical? I mean, just how many strings did you have to pull to get that new intern of yours posted here?”

Rodney bristled at the implication. “Kurt Hummel is more than just some intern. The kid’s a prodigy; his talents would have been wasted back on Earth.”

“Nevertheless, it wasn’t exactly a standard transfer and you know it,” John reminded him. He checked his watch. “This conversation is basically irrelevant at this point anyway; they’ll be here in under an hour.”

“Well then why did you even bother calling this meeting?” Rodney demanded, shaking his head in bewilderment.

Before John got a chance to answer, Teyla spoke up on his behalf. “I suggested that John call this meeting to give you a chance to… air any grievances you have in a public domain.”

This revelation came as no surprise to anyone. Considering she was the only member of the Atlantis council who was not originally from Earth, it often surprised people how often she ended up being the one who kept the peace between them all. Hell, she spent plenty of time just keeping peace between Rodney and John, who despite being married for over five years, still butted heads just as often as the day they met, if not more.

“Look, Dr. McKay, we understand your concerns,” said Woolsey from the end of the table. “However, that being said, I support General Sheppard’s decision. Given the recent sightings of the Lucian Alliance here in the Pegasus galaxy, we could use some extra hands.”

“Even if most of them haven’t even seen real combat yet?” Rodney pointed out, though the fight had gone out of his words; he obviously realized that this was not an argument he could win.

“Well, you know what they say: no time like the present,” Jennifer cheerfully pointed out. “Honestly, though, I’ll just be glad to get some extra hands in the infirmary.” She turned to John, giving him a pointed look. “You did make sure some of the new recruits have medical training, right?”

“Yes, Doc, no need to sic your husband on me. You’ll get your new recruits when I get mine,” John assured her. “Not that you need Ronon to back you up, of course,” he hastily back-pedalled when she arched an eyebrow at him. “You can handle yourself just fine.”

“And don’t you forget it,” Jennifer replied with a small smirk.

The remainder of the meeting was spent going over rumours of Lucian Alliance activity in the Pegasus Galaxy. Woolsey and Keller were both pushing for a wait and see policy, while John wanted to take a more active approach to the situation and seek them out. Rodney, of course, was no help to him, and Teyla spent most of the time acting as mediator between the four of them. It was actually a relief when a voice finally announced over the intercom, “Councillors, we’ve got gate activity,” and then a few seconds after that, “It’s Earth.”

“I guess that’s our cue,” John said, pushing back his chair and getting to his feet. “Until next time, then.”

He was halfway to the door by the time Woolsey said, “Well alright, then, I guess we’ll continue this tomorrow.” Anything he said after that was lost to John as he moved out of earshot.

People were already starting to come through the gate as John reached the top of the stairs. Seeing the raw enthusiasm, the sheer awe on all those young faces as they tried to take in their new surroundings, John suddenly felt old. How long had it been since he had experienced similar feelings of wonder?

As the crowd in front of the gate got bigger, he noticed that while a handful of them were already wearing the Atlantis uniform - mostly with the blue and yellow stripes of science and medical personnel - a lot of them still wore standard SGC uniform, and John made a mental note to get that sorted out with Woolsey once everyone was properly situated.

“So, which one’s yours?”

Rodney had appeared by his side.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” John replied, keeping his voice neutral.

“Don’t give me that,” Rodney shot back. “I know your sister bullied you into getting your nephew transferred along with the rest of these young Neanderthals. What’s his name again? Blake?”

“Blaine. And there was no bullying involved,” John insisted. “She helpfully suggested it, and I thought it would be a great opportunity for the kid. You’re forgetting that I’m a general now and can make those sorts of decisions.”

“And you’re forgetting that I have a sister as well. They don’t ‘helpfully suggest’ anything.”

John couldn’t think of an answer to that, mostly because Rodney was more or less right, and John made a point of never telling him that if he could help it. Rodney’s head was big enough as it was.

“So which one’s yours?” Rodney repeated after a few seconds.

It took a moment, but John finally managed to pick out his nephew from the rest of the crowd. “That one on the far left. He’s standing next to one of Keller’s medics.”

“Okay, there are a couple of those,” Rodney said with a hint of annoyance. “Can you be a little more specific?”

“He’s the one who looks like a hobbit,” John replied, a little snippily.

“Oh, yeah, now I see him,” Rodney said. Then he turned to look at John in surprise. “Wait, you know what a hobbit is?”

“I saw the movies,” John shot back.

Before they could continue that line of conversation, John heard someone clear their throat behind them, and turned to see Woolsey standing there, looking disapproving.

“Something I can help you with, Mr. Woolsey?” he asked, putting on his most charming smile. Woolsey wasn’t impressed in the least.

“In case you’ve forgotten - and I wouldn’t be surprised if you had, to be honest - you’re the ranking military officer on Atlantis,” Woolsey reminded him.

“No, I haven’t forgotten,” John replied. “So?”

“So, is it not your duty as ranking military officer to greet new military personnel?”

Damn, he had forgotten about that. “Yeah, right, I was just… giving them all a chance to get through the gate. And get acclimated- ”

“Acclimatized,” Rodney corrected helpfully. “You shouldn’t try to use big words.”

“Right, acclimatized,” John corrected himself, pointedly ignoring Rodney’s second comment.

“Mm-hm…” Woolsey obviously didn’t believe him, but apparently decided to let it slide, instead just continuing on his way to his office. John turned back to Rodney.

“Well, I guess we should go say hello to the young Neanderthals,” he said, with a faint grin. Rodney rolled his eyes, but still followed him down to the gate.

… … …

A/N: Yes, I do know John has a brother, not a sister. It just seemed easier to do it this way than try to explain why Blaine’s last name was Anderson instead of Sheppard if he was supposed to be David’s son.
