Been in California since Friday. First time seeing the pacific. Came to San Diego. Seems pretty nice. I never realized there were mountains this far south in CA, but they are the barest saddest looking mountains I've ever seen. Only trees on them were obviously planted by people (ie palm trees). We are staying right in the middle of them, and its pretty bare. The main part of the city is okay - cleaner than New York, seems to have some character. Coronado was okay, but I think more hype than it deserves. La Jolla was probably my favorite - the view in any direction was beautiful, much better than Coronado. Crazy waves, seals, sea lions, pelicans. UCSD was gigantic. There is a lot of new sprawl and I don't really like that part of it, but I guess thats just what happens around a city as time goes on.
We drove up to LA today...Santa Monica was nice, Beverly Hills was clean. Haven't seen downtown LA yet, but everything in the Hollywood/West LA/Santa Monica/Beverly Hills area, if it wasn't completely touristy, looked a lot like White Plains. New York has a lot more character. Food at the market was really awesome though. I had Moishe's, and it was incredible. It was like I was eating the great food in israel. The hummus (hamous, which is how they spelled it in israel) was exactly like the creamy delicious hummus in israel. The Ikra was also amazing, and mixed well with the hummus. Fattoush..mmm. This amazing potato salad with peppers and lemon - no mayo or egg or any of that crap. Really awesome. definitely the best meal so far this week, and we've eaten reasonably well. We are eating at Canter's on christmas day, because really other than some chinese restaurant, what else will be open? Maybe I'll order a Larry David.
There was something weird about LA and I'm not sure how to describe exactly what it is. But its clearly a big city and clearly crowded, but the sidewalks are so wide you don't feel how crowded it is. You are walking down the sidewalk and its not crowded, but there are cars EVERYWHERE.
Something about most of LA just irked me - I'm an east sider through and through.
More animals tomorrow.
