Outsidelands with Paul McCartney

Aug 10, 2013 11:19

For the first day of my sabbatical, Neal got us tickets to Outsidelands on Friday. :D

One downside is that they had camera restrictions; I could only bring my Olympus Pen, and even had to smuggle in the half-assed lens. Still, it was a good time.

We wandered a bit, checking out all of the stages. Apparently, being drunk in whiteface is an art form these days.

This was some sort of wooden sculpture lion or bison. The sculptor felt it important to give the animal a twig and berries, made of a twig and berries.

I don't know this band at all, but they were pretty good.

We swung back by this stage, and the band was now a rather good bluegrass band - with a mandolin substituting for the banjo.

This gal had a nice look, but the dude in the background with the striped vest was way better with the lasso.

We headed over to the comedy stage.

Wyatt Cenac was in the audience. I had to be surreptitious about pics, as they were big on No Photography Allowed.

Maria Bamford was off-the-charts strange and funny.

The main reason we were there, though, was Paul McCartney. We had a hell of a time making our way to the front, but we slithered close, and it was so worth it. He was amazing Such quality music, so much energy, such trippy visuals!

Magical Mystery Tour.

The Long And Winding Road.

Blackbird.

Lady Madonna.

An absolutely fantastic All Together Now.

Lovely Rita, Meter Maid.

It was a little over an hour and a half in to his two-hour set - after an hour of waiting in the press of the crowd beforehand - when my attempts to say hydrated by bringing a Hyrapak came back to bite me. Eventually, nature would no longer send to voicemail, and we had to give up our prime spots to visit the bushes. :(

We did get to see the rest of the great music from a merely-adequate spot. Live And Let Die was just crazy pyrotechnic awesomeness.

Nice bit at the end.

What a great way to start my break!
