Percy had headed down to the canteen a few minutes early to find a seat away from his secretary's friends. He managed to eat out or in his office most days, and they practically descended on him when he made it to the canteen. Why, he wasn't sure. Perhaps Lillith had told them he was a good boss, or something.
Maybe Penny would be a buffer today, anyway. He had picked out a salad and found a seat in the corner. From there, he was able to spot her as she walked in and selected her food. When she stopped and looked around, he waved her over.
Penny spotted Percy sat in a corner and waved before going over to join him.
"Hi Percy," she said with a smile. "I'm good thanks. How are you?"
She sat down in the seat next to him and took a bite from her sandwich. She didn't know how Percy could eat salad so often. Penny made a mental note to take him out for something unhealthy and covered in cheese sometime soon.
"I'm doing well, thank you. It's good to finally catch up," he grinned, and took a sip of the mineral water he'd brought from home. He noticed his salad had come with a little cup of sunflower seeds, so he sprinkled them over the greens. Odd, but it probably tasted good.
"So, how are you adjusting to life at the Ministry? Enjoying your job?" he asked.
"It is good to see you," Penny agreed. "I can't believe I've worked here this long and we haven't had lunch together till now."
Penny watched as Percy sprinkled his salad with some sort of seed and stole one that was left in the cup, giving a cheeky grin as she did so.
"It's great, thanks. My fellow researcher, Kevin, seems really nice and it's just so great to have a job that uses my brain," Penny replied, taking another bite of her sandwich.
"How's things in your office? Everything running like clockwork?"
Percy leaned forward as if sharing a secret. "I'll be honest, you probably won't find me down here to eat with unless we arrange it beforehand. I tend to hide in the office or head out for lunch, depending on my mood or if I have a meeting. But I would be happy to arrange more lunches with you- at least once a week, I think," he suggested.
He gave her a mock glare when she stole his seeds but let her have them, and couldn't help but grin back a little.
"I know what you mean. That first month I just felt like basking in the fact that my brain was as tired as my body at the end of the day. It's wonderful," he nodded and took a bite of his sandwich. "Maybe not clockwork, but close enough to keep me sane. It's been busier than usual lately, but I like it that way."
"How's life outside of work?" he asked, having stopped himself from inquiring more about the research she was doing. He could ask later, but it'd been a long time since they caught up.
"Hmm," Percy said, wondering how to most diplomatically answer that question. "Well, my secretary's friends are always quite friendly," he glanced over at the three girls sitting together, chatting over salads and glancing in his direction occasionally. The blonde one noticed his look and grinned at him. Drat. "And sometimes that makes it hard to eat and get back to work on time. It's just more efficient to hide," he smiled slightly.
"You don't have to apologize for your manners. But that does sound nice," he nodded, liking the idea even more. "Angelina? How is she? I regret I haven't talked to her in a while. What do you two get up to?"
"Hestia is doing well," he smiled fondly. "I took her to the opera recently and I've been wondering where else I could take her next time. That's the problem with such nice dates- it sets a precedent."
"More efficient?" Penny said with a smile. "Be honest Percy, are you being harassed by your secretary? Maybe you should stop wearing those too tight robes," she joked.
Penny finished off her sandwich and wiped her hands on the napkin before picking up her Custard Slice.
"She's fine I think. We usually meet up for lunch and have a chat, but on Saturday we did go out dancing. That was fun," Penny smiled, remembering. She wondered if Angelina had gone on that date, and made a mental note to meet up with her soon and ask.
"Opera! Did you like it?" Penny said, a little surprised. She wouldn't have thought that Percy would like going on a muggle date. Hestia must be a good influence on him.
"Well, they don't all have to be as fancy. You could cook her favourite meal maybe or organise a picnic. If she knows you've put effort into it I'm sure it'll be just as appreciated."
