Lavender had been awake since six, as she was often prone to do these days. Get up, light breakfast to accompany the potion she was taking, bit of a run - Hyde Park was starting to become a rather favourite place of hers - then back to her grandmother's house. She'd showered then and decided that her new ballet shoes could start getting broken in later.
It was Lavender's day off and so she was keeping herself entertained in the kitchen. She'd already made scones, which were cooling on the rack, and there was a chocolate fudge cake which she planned to take into work to share in the oven. Next up, she was going to have a go at egg custard tarts.
Only one of the owls that was delivering the post seemed rather agitated to see her.
How bothersome. She was just about to get started on the custard. But just because the owl seemed agitated didn't mean that she had to be. Judging by what it was carrying, Lavender knew was it was holding, so she purposely made that particular owl wait to last, giving all the others plenty of praise and sorting out the rest of the mail into piles before she got to it.
"Hand it over then," she told it, reaching to unfasten the letter from the owl's hold. Lavender wondered if breaking the seal - albeit with a butter knife - was supposed to be momentous than this. There were probably other people having kittens right about now.
