"You know, it would be easier if you could help, Teddy," the baby looked at her, blinked and knocked down the little tower of blocks Fleur had stacked for him.
"Aieee!" He clapped and cheered, then held out one of the blocks for Fleur. "Uh!"
"Well, if you insist," Fleur laughed and gathered the other scattered blocks with her wand, she was too pregnant to crawl about on the floor successfully these days. "I did not mean help knock down ze... the blocks," she tried to be careful enunciating her words correctly around Teddy. It was good practice for her own child and it was best for her agency as well. Fleur could do it when she tried. It was not easy, so she did not bother all the time, but with Teddy she always tried her best. "I meant for you to help me make my choice." Fleur had decided early on that she simply could not afford the more experienced of her choices for an Advocate. It was simply too big of a stretch for the young agency and she was already stretching herself by hiring employees instead of relying on volunteers. She was left with two candidates, Hermione and one with some experience even if it was only four months.
Fleur had lunch with one of their references today and she'd been thinking about the odd meeting as she played with little Teddy. That her lunch meeting had been decidedly strange made Fleur wary. She'd already been leaning away from Alice based on her number of job changes, although Fleur had tried to be fair about that. Her job changes seemed to show a progression. Six months in administration at St. Mungo's, 14 months as a receptionist in patient advocacy and the past 4 as an actual case worker hadn't exactly been jumping around. Still, between the changes and the reference that really didn't have anything glowing to say about Alice other than she was enthusiastic, Fleur felt Hermione would likely be the better candidate of the two. Hermione's references were impeccably sound and Fleur knew her as well. She had probably given Alice more consideration because of that. Fleur wanted to be fair. To be fair, she felt she couldn't pay too much attention to her own knowledge of Hermione. She should, however, pay attention to her instincts and to the differences in their recommendations.
Teddy knocked down the blocks after Fleur set them up again and squealed in delight. Things were pretty simple when you were 11 months old. "Theengs should be so simple for me, Teddy." She tickled his cute little toes through his socks.
This time Teddy didn't hand her a block to restack and Fleur wondered if he was getting tired. A moment later, he shivered and Fleur understood. "Nappy time for you, little man." She struggled to her knees and then slid herself up onto the sofa before coaxing Teddy to her to pick him up. She banished the blocks to the toy basket before she stood, not wanting to step on anything since it was impossible to see her own feet these days. While she sorted Teddy out, she finalized her decision. She would review her notes once more to make sure she hadn't overlooked something but she understood the importance of instinct and glowing versus mediocre references. Once he was in a fresh nappy, Fleur blew on Teddy's tummy and smiled.
Things seemed pretty simple now to Fleur too.
