The shop was unusually quiet that afternoon, so a few hours after lunch, Madam S sent Percy home early. It was probably for the best, really. The shop had lulls of inactivity which he wasn’t completely used to yet, and wasn’t entirely sure he wanted to be used to. It hadn’t been like that at the Ministry, there had always been a steady stream of work from his inbox to his outbox, and he couldn’t remember ever having a solid hour there without anything to do. He liked that feeling of constantly having things to occupy his time, and feeling that he was always being useful. It was only lately that he really started noticing how much down-time he had at his job at the shop, though he knew it had been that way for most of his time of employment there. Lately, when it was particularly quiet, he’d grow restless, and have to try to fight the urge to restock the shelves when it wasn’t entirely necessary, or reorganize the displays. It must have been noticed by his boss though, if he was being sent home rather than left to it as he had been in the past.
At this hour, Percy knew that he’d find the Burrow empty, if he went straight home. Ginny was away at school (thankfully Mum had put her foot down about that), and Charlie, Mum, and Dad would all still be at work at this hour. He still found it strange to be alone in his quiet, empty home, when it had always been so chaotic in the past, so he decided to take a walk through the village before he headed back.
He said goodbye to Penny and Madam S, before heading out into the village.
