Katie wandered out of Angelina's flat and into the hall. She noticed a solitary figure on the steps and after a moment, realized it was George.

"Hey you," she said, sitting down next to him. "How's my favourite redhead?"

George glanced over, smiling slowly. "Damn. I'm everyone's favourite something tonight." He lifted his glass to her, still mostly full of now slightly chilly wine.

He took a sip, more for the flavour on his tongue than to actually drink, then set the glass by his thigh. "Doing okay though. You?"

"Oh really? Well, they can't have you." She put her arm around him possessively and grinned.

"I'm glad. I'm doing alright. Better than I expected, actually," she admitted.

"Yeah? Me too." He gave her a gentle nudge. "Things going okay with the job? Official-ness agreeing with you?"

He wasn't sure what else to say; things had been strained with Katie for a while, but he really did want them to be better.

"Yeah," she said, nudging him back. "It's not entirely what I expected. But it's good. I like volunteering more. How about you? How's the museum coming?"

"Great. Got a curator, and she's getting things put together. Some of Aunt Muriel's friends got together a fundraiser thing, and I think we're set for the first month or so. Gonna suggest a donation for admission, hoping that people won't balk at giving at least that, and that some might even give more."

He ran his finger across the top of the glass, but didn't drink. "Things still good at the orphanage? Great gift you thought of. Most of us don't need another voucher or anything, and I'm sure the money meant more to the kids."

"That's great. I'm glad it's going well. And I don't think people will mind donating," Katie said.

"Things are great," Katie said, "Thanks. I think it's one of the better ideas I've had in well...ever. In a year of me doing stupid things, I'm glad I could end it on a good note. And the money will be really good. It'll make things easier. We won't have to stretch clothes for as many kids. We can buy them new toys and bedlinens. Ollie said he'd come by with some brooms." She rested her head on his shoulder. "I think things are going to be okay, George," she said quietly.

"Yeah, they are. And in a couple months, I'll make sure they get Gigglers. And Rainbow lollies."

He wondered if she'd sort it out, then figured she would. Katie wasn't stupid...

"Cheers, mate," Katie said.

"You sticking around until midnight?"

George shrugged, moving his feet down one step and leaning his elbows on his knees. "Close to," he said after a moment. "There's someone I've got to ring in the New Year properly with, y'know?"

"Ah," Katie said with a nod. Fred, of course.

"Do you think he'd mind if I stole an early New Year's kiss, then?" she asked with a coy smile. She thought Fred'd be all for it, personally, but it was always polite to ask first.

George smiled faintly, then shrugged one shoulder. "Probably not. He wasn't much for minding who I kissed, really..."

"He was terribly generous, wasn't he?" Katie said, before leaning in to kiss George gently. After a few moments, she deepened the kiss, moving her hand up to his hair.

George was struck suddenly, as their lips met, by just how long it had been, since he'd been kissed. Or kissed anyone else... It probably wasn't right to even consider kissing Katie this way, but...

...he couldn't help it. He didn't stop, didn't pull away, but let her deepen the kiss, sliding his fingers into her hair and keeping her close for another long moment. And when they parted, he lingered at her lips for another breath, then brushed a softer kiss to the corner of her mouth.

Katie smiled as they pulled apart, resting her forehead against George's. "Wow," she murmured. She leaned forward and kissed him again. "Wow."

He traced her cheek with his thumb, then slipped his fingers from her hair, sitting back and giving her a wry smile. "It's been ages," he said in a near-whisper, and his gaze dropped to his knee. "Feels like forever..."

He took a slow breath, then met her eyes again. "So. Um..." A soft laugh. "Happy New Year, Kat..."
