He took a sip, more for the flavour on his tongue than to actually drink, then set the glass by his thigh. "Doing okay though. You?"

"I'm glad. I'm doing alright. Better than I expected, actually," she admitted.

He ran his finger across the top of the glass, but didn't drink. "Things still good at the orphanage? Great gift you thought of. Most of us don't need another voucher or anything, and I'm sure the money meant more to the kids."

"Things are great," Katie said, "Thanks. I think it's one of the better ideas I've had in well...ever. In a year of me doing stupid things, I'm glad I could end it on a good note. She rested her head on his shoulder. "I think things are going to be okay, George," she said quietly.

He wondered if she'd sort it out, then figured she would. Katie wasn't stupid...

...he couldn't help it. He didn't stop, didn't pull away, but let her deepen the kiss, sliding his fingers into her hair and keeping her close for another long moment. And when they parted, he lingered at her lips for another breath, then brushed a softer kiss to the corner of her mouth.

He took a slow breath, then met her eyes again. "So. Um..." A soft laugh. "Happy New Year, Kat..."
