Starting over was easier than I thought. Maybe I don't hate myself so much after all. Though it was easy mostly because I had the old scripts to fall back on for spare parts ( Read more... )

No offense meant, but I'd never let your particular style of writing or game balance be a part of one of my projects, or at least this one. It would be completely counter-productive to what I'm going for. It's nothing against what you do, but to be honest stuff like Sword of Jade isn't especially my cup of tea, nor is it the cup for an eventual audience beyond people who enjoy indie games about doggies and high school philosophy courses. You've probably figured this out already, so I didn't have to tell you, but being nice to Charbile isn't the way we communicate with Charbile.

The only things I think Motrya needs now are, obviously, completion beyond the first 1/4 of the game, better marketing (I've basically determined I totally fail at this) and for my musician to be a little more dedicated. Oh, those fickle musicians. You know how they are. You know.

I do use the default OHR battle system, but every battle in the game requires strategy and none of my testers (OHR users and non) have had any complaints other than a few fights that were initially too hard. There are three difficulty levels to the game anyway, so anyway that's anyway. The card game is an unashamed ripoff of Triple Triad with more sparklies, and it is actually quite addictive, and was an accidentally awesome thing to improve the game with. I've considered making a standalone version of it, and after Motrya my next project is going to be a "card game" about a mermaid who controls various fish. You could say I was inspired.

Haha, nobody ever takes me up on that offer anymore.

Hmm. Default battles, not good not good. It'll be interesting to see what happens. I could go on, but I really don't want to discourage you. Some things you have to learn for yourself. Well, all things. That concludes today's doggy metaphysics class.

But can't hold back about the mermaid card game. Really? REALLY, JSH? And you wonder why you have trouble with the enthusiasm for your recent work? Is this the path? What Would Hachi Do.

Women like cutesy stuff like PopCap + Card Games are Simple

All I need is a good artist. It prints money.

j/k actually I've meant to make Mermaid Game for a while. I like games with female lead characters, and games about the ocean. The "battle system" will play like a Yu-Gi-Oh match but with aquatic creatures (tons of species and "magic" ideas to milk). I think it has legs. Basically it'll be a collectible card game RPG.

I could always make that game about having 7 days to live and having to train with various masters then hunt down your killer. It was a good idea, but I just don't write darkly enough for it be engaging.

PS, if you want a good laugh (not sure if this'll ever make it to HamsterSpeak):

So long as there's like an element besides WATER. Jeez, think this one through my man.

The dark stuff is never that engaging. I've recently come to this line of thinking about it: i want conflict, it's okay to heap it on and make it look impossible to overcome, be it 'dark' or whatever, but i want to see the author -believably- pull their characters out of it, for them to overcome what seemed impossible. always feel let down when everyone dies or people break up or JSH uses ohr default battles.

holy giz! laughing pretty hard. saw hachi in it and was like, 'feel sorry for the suckers up against that' to see me in there. but Moogle1! still want my 'beat moogle in an ohr contest' badge. was so much fun, probably not worth it, but so much fun.

hilarious.

I have a basic plot in mind, but since I'm not concentrating on it yet I don't have much else to say. It was inspired by Disney's recent trend of princess/prince role-reversal, which I have always had an interest in, along with gender conflicts (which you can see in OHR House 3), being a privileged feminist. The idea is that it's sort of a warped, grittier The Little Mermaid.
