Starting over was easier than I thought. Maybe I don't hate myself so much after all. Though it was easy mostly because I had the old scripts to fall back on for spare parts.
- Got rid of every instance of "read/write global" in the scripts. In fact, I'm going to state this as a rule: Don't ever use "read/write global" in a script that you plan on referring back to later. Always give them names. If you're using them as a fake array then make functions that point back to the globals. Three months down the line you won't remember what "readglobal(88)" means.
- Added a couple of new features to the battle system. Contemplating getting rid of a few old ones. Need some time to meditate on what to keep and throw away. I'll work on map layouts and dialogue while I think about this.
- Redrew all the walkabouts I'll need for the HoOHR contest. That is to say... not a lot. I drew the walkabouts for the four heroes that'll be available in the demo, and all the other NPCs will be palette swaps of the MC. Don't want to start drawing them for real until I've made sure exactly how many of each type of walkabout I'll need.
- I took some reference from Mystic Ark to figure out how to differentiate between male and female sprites. Apparently they look more masculine if they swing their shoulders while walking, and more feminine if they swing their arms. Still think it's the best game ever, by the way.
- Ahihiko Mori rhymes with hikikomori. Roffles.
- And apparently there's a Mystic Ark 2!! On the Playstation! They didn't call it Elnard 3. It's all in Japanese though and I can state with confidence right now that it will never, ever be translated.
