The morning after Oscar

Feb 28, 2011 09:06

So, the Oscars were last night; I managed to stay up for the whole thing (it's hard when you live on the east coast). I was looking forward to catching the results in a few minor categories, mostly animated feature (surprised?) and the original score.

Like a lot of furs I know, I was disappointed that How To Train Your Dragon did not win the Oscar for best animated feature, losing to Toy Story 3. However, as I had only seen one of three nominees, I'm forced to reserve judgement on the Academy's votes in this category. But I would've liked to see it win nevertheless, being an awesome movie.

However, I will have to take issue on HTTYD's losing to The Social Network in the original score category. Unlike the animated feature category, I was able to listen to significant portions of the soundtrack for three of the five films; John Powell's score for HTTYD was an exciting, heartstring-tugging epic well suited to the film and for use on its own, while Trent Reznor's score for The Social Network was largely bland. Even Zimmer's Inception was better (and the excerpt from Desplat's The King's Speech wasn't half bad either).

While I hesitate on where to place Desplat's or Rahman's work, I will have to say that, in this category, my order is HTTYD > Inception > The Social Network. Seriously guys, if you're going to vote in this category, actually listen to the soundtrack. Maybe then you wouldn't so completely wrong.
