Thoughts from Saturday afternoon:
Just under a year ago, I think Danka and I were in Croatia. Pure luxury by comparison. I’m trying to relax and catch anything from the air conditioner at all while balancing a cup of wine between two mis-matched single beds. I just rose to let Danka out of the bathroom, a tin-walled addition to this room which is itself a windowless wooden addition with tin roof to a home, collectively known as “the apartment” in Ulithi. I asked Danka earlier if she and I had ever stayed in a dirtier place together. She gave it a lot of thought, and, lemonade-style, answered that our landlords had never considered anyone might push the beds together in the middle of the room, and so they had never thought of cleaning underneath. I remain certain, lemon-style, that they have been brushing the dirt under the two beds since the room was constructed.
The troisieme monde est le troisieme monde.
I mean, I’ve been in some homes and places, mostly in Thailand and Malaysia, that rivaled this, but not many.
