Editorial: Kandt is best candidate for Reno city attorney
The Opinion of the RGJ Editorial Board 9:10 p.m. PDT October 29, 2014

In choosing between experienced lawyers Karl Hall and Brett Kandt for the city's next city attorney, a nonpartisan position, Reno voters have a tough choice to make.

Hall served as Washoe County's chief deputy district attorney for 26 years, serving under DA's from Mills Lane to Dick Gammick. He handled a wide variety of cases in the District Attorney's Office and has taught classes to law-enforcement officers on search and seizure and other constitutional issues.

Most recently, Hall has been director of the Senior Law Project.

Kandt is special deputy to the Nevada attorney general, working as senior policy adviser. During his long tenure with Attorney General's Office, he has represented the state treasurer, controller and the Department of Administration. He has negotiated contracts and handled related litigation. His current duties include executive director of the Nevada Prosecution Advisory Council and executive director of the Technological Crime Advisory Board.

Kandt also has served on numerous local government boards and commissions, including the City of Reno Financial Advisory Board. He was chairman of the Reno Service Priorities Task Force, which advised the city in the wake of the great recession.

Kandt and Hall are seeking to succeed John Kadlic, who defeated Kandt in the election for city attorney eight years ago. He is not running for re-election.

Kandt has the breadth of experience that makes him the better candidate for the office. He also has the intensity and the independence that an office that represents both the city and the citizens needs.

Voters in Reno should elect Kandt Reno city attorney.
