US Peace Corps Leaving Yap (FSM) Outer Islands for Security & Safety Reasons

Jan 19, 2011 10:40

This is troubling news. Ulithi seems to be becoming an inhospitable place. I say this after hearing many details from a hellish 6-month stay there by some Australian yachtie friends, Andrew & Jenny and their two lovely young daughters. They washed ashore on the Ulithi atoll, and tried to refit their sailboat there. While some locals, including my old friend Mario, were apparently helpful to them, others fleeced them blind. The islanders stole almost everything that could be stolen from their yacht, including clothing and personal effects, over a long period of time.

And now the Peace Corps is leaving Ulithi. Danka and I stayed there several times, as well as once in Wohleai (which the Peace Corps has already left) . . . .

Peace Corps pulls out of Falalop, Ulithi.
Wednesday, January 19, 2011 12:00AM.

COLONIA, Yap (Yap State Government) - Peace Corps safety and security officer Amy Musrasrik along with a staff member from the Palau office Noe Yalap met with Yap Gov. Sebastian Anefal and Lt. Gov. TonyTareg to brief them on a recent visit to Ulithi. The visit was made to remove a Peace Corps volunteer from Falalop, Ulithi due to safety and security concerns.

According to Musrasrik, the home of the volunteers was broken into on more than one occasion. The community has taken some measures on the first case by putting the responsible individual to community service.

Musrasrik said while such matters are usually handled by local authorities, the Peace Corps program has set policies that require actions to be taken.
Anefal said if necessary, the State Attorney General’s Office can further look into the matter.

Another volunteer in Falalop, Ulithi, left last month due to personal reasons. Peace Corps recently pulled volunteers out of Woleai due to safety and security concerns earlier last year.
