Cycling is a sport most people are aware of but have little interest in. To them a bicycle, not to be confused with that other bike the motorcycle, is merely something that they use to get around town when it's not raining. people who never watch sport or show any interest in sport still watch the olympics; so Chris Hoy has a wider celebrity, which gives him more chance of winning something like this. Sports personality of the year is "Who have you heard most about" of the year, or so it seems to me.
