So, it's been a day. I had to call into work telling them I wasn't going to be in today due to family emergency. And it was a whopper of a one.
Carrie's in the hospital. She was having trouble breathing this morning, Mom woke me up at 5:00am to hold the Bean up while she tried to give her a breathing treatment. 5:05am saw Mom calling 911, 5:15 the Firemen showed up with oxygen and by 5:22 Mom and Carrie were in the back of an ambulance going to the ER. After an hour or so in the ER, discovering she had a temp. as high as 104 F, they decided to admit her. She has pneumonia in both her lungs, probably the downward spiral from a previous sinus infection.
She's doing better now. We spent most of the day in ICU because that was the only place with a free bed, but honestly, one of the few places I think could handle Carrie at the time. She is doing better now in comparison, but I have a feeling she will be in the hospital all weekend.
Mom's with her, I'm home now, Andrew's going to visit tonight. We were all there this morning and her home health nurse was there for awhile today. God bless Nicole, my future sister-in-law, who on only two hours sleep had the clearest head of us all. And considering her best friend just died from cancer, Nicole has got a backbone and nerve of steel.
It's just frustrating because the doctors and nursing staff just don't know how to approach someone with CP. The good ones, and we met a few good ones today, will ask you what's normal and what's not to form a baseline. The not so good ones, like a few we also met today, make assumptions about my sister's condition not understanding that some of the things they are striving to treat are, in fact, normal. And don't get me started on the people who are all, "Lead, follow, or get out of the way." I understand this is your job, but this is only a human being my mother's been caring for going on 27 years, I think she has the slight advantage.
Still, I'm hopeful. It's been a long time since Carrie's been in the hospital, and I've certainly seen her worse, but everyone is just so over-tired and nerve-shot right now it's kind of insane. Carrie was very responsive today, until right around the time I left, which is so understandable considering the fact she probably didn't sleep last night, is fighting off infection, and has had a hell of a day. But she's a trooper, my twin sister, and she's honestly been taking most of it in stride.
Here's hoping tomorrow brings better news. I'm somehow going to try to work my shift tomorrow without freaking out, but screw it, I'm going to have my cell phone on me at all times.
