I've been spewing my venom all morning, but there some interesting ideas developing in other forums. Having recorded Maelstrom on my DVR, I watched the death scene several times, frame by frame. Of note, there really was a Cylon Raider - it's seen from Lee's perspective right before I reports "Visual...visual"..... screen caps over at the Sci Fi boards confirm it.
I would be cool with that. I thought there really was a Cylon raider too. What I don't get is why Kara seems to be accepting death, rather than some prophetic destiny. When she and Lee talk about where they want their pictures to go, that's death talk, not "all this has happened before and will happen again."
I agree... did you notice how she gave the figure Aurora to the Admiral (reminded me of how people give things away before committing suicide) The only thing that makes sense in the senseless is that Kara's self-worth was as a hotshot pilot and once that was comprimised (fear of being grounded) she may have preferred death to life.
What I want to know is why Lee wants to put his picture next to whoever and whathisface.... maybe to get as far away from Dee as possible...snerk....
I have to amend my response after listening to Ron Moore's podcast this afternoon. The original script had Kara escaping death and returning to the fleet (a typical Kara-centric, exposition ep). Ron then thought that it would be audacious for the writers to take it all the way....i.e. her actual death. He said that the writers starting tossing around death ideas and he analogized it as a shark frenzy. They finally decided that although they might alienate some of the viewers, the shock value was worth it.
The podcast also included words from Ron's wife who tried to reassure us, saying something like "don't jump ship, Kara fans", so we'll see. Right now, I'm just annoyed at the total disregard of the fans.
Yes, the episode's still sinking in for me, but I'm completely puzzled as to why she seemed to expect death. That felt odd to me. I'm not enough of a Kara fan to trust my own views on this, so I'm kind of reassured to see someone else had a problem with that. Perhaps she doesn't really believe she has a special destiny? Doubtful given what we've seen. I will have to mull this over some more.
I'm willing to wait for more -- the show has come back from worse lows -- but I still don't get what happened to Kara emotionally. If, as she seemed to do, she accepted death, she may have a big surprise coming.
