LJ is a big one: in the last week I've met amaebi and rhiannonstone, who I'd never met before but have been talking with on LJ for quite a while, and I hope both turn into reasonably long-term relationships. Otherwise, through work is a big vector.
I have more time now to think about this. Bicycling, particularly organized rides, have led me to meet people. Art shows, specifically the fairly big local First Friday events where all the galleries open up and stay open until 10 pm on the first friday evening of each month: met a ton of people. None have stayed in long-term contact but that's because of me not them.
I think almost by definition one meets friends by having something in common with them -- an activity (regular or irregular), a mutual friend, a location, etc. And obviously the more one does a related set of activities the more people one will meet that way
( ... )
I straddle a mix of the goth scene, burner scene, arg scene, and now yoga scene I guess! My best friends are those I've known for years though, and I find it fairly hard now to make close new friends.
