Soooo… It’s been a big year already, and I’m not sure where to start. Will and I are splitting, and he is moving to SF at the end of the month to pursue his music career and personal development. He doesn’t have a visa that allows him to stay for more than 6 months at the moment, but doors tend to open in his presence, so who knows what will happen. While it’s been a challenging few months, I support this move. We are in agreement that it is easier for each of us to pursue what we want right now if we don’t try to do so together.
After much back and forth about what I would do accommodation-wise, I’ve decided to stay in our apartment through the end of the lease at the beginning of August and get a friend in to the mezzanine room to help cover the expenses. I love my neighbourhood (especially being 100m from both the gym and park), and decided not to let Will’s radical life changes force me out of that before I was ready. (as appealing as the idea of walking out with only 2 suitcases was…)
I am planning to go to the US for a month over August and early September, working remotely from SF for a couple weeks and taking a week off each for Burning Man and post-burn decompression. This allows me to not rush my trip, but also to not eat all of my leave. After returning from the US, I’m planning to sublet my friend Steph's house for a couple months, which means I've got til early November to decide next steps, such as whether I want to stay in shared accommodation or go back out into my own place). Hopefully, that's plenty of time.
In the interim, there's lots of small things burbling along as well: work travel should take me to Perth, Singapore, Manila (and/or Jakarta), Northern Territories, and if I'm lucky, Kobe Japan. Burning Seed happens at the end of September, which will be too close to Burning Man for comfort (again).
Work continues to develop momentum in the direction of awesome, I have lots of high quality people around, and I enjoy exploring what Melbourne has to offer. It still doesn't feel like home, and I don't know if that will change. I ponder what I want to do with my future, and whether that's in or out of academia. Nothing new there, really...
