Summary: Inara playing the samisen
Mistress Sheydra led the way into the small room. There were thick mats on the floor. She pulled a screen across the opening and turned to Inara, “It is time to see what you have learned.” She sat gracefully on the cushions. “Please begin.”
Inara placed her samisen on the mat before bowing. “Welcome Mistress. I am honored to play for you.” She sat and picked up the samisen. “What do you desire to hear?”
“Lotus flowers in the wind.”
Inara bent her head and tuned the strings. Her fingers danced as music filled the room. When she was finished, she looked at Mistress Sheydra. “Shall I play another?”
“Yes. Play one that you enjoy.”
“This is the waves on the beach.” The music was different with an undertone of darkness. “Another?”
Mistress Sheydra smiled. “You have learned to play the samisen well. Your next lessons will be learning the words that go with the music.”
“Thank you.” Inara rose and bowed before exiting.
Mistress Sheydra thought about Inara’s playing and the many skills she had yet to master. Inara would make an excellent Companion and perhaps one day become mistress of Madrassa House.
