I do seem to talk an awful lot about fashion, fandom, the combination of both & other such things, don't I? Though I think it would surprise some people to learn that I (very sadly) sometimes don't always practise the applications of such. & really, if I'm going to babble on about it constantly, I should apply it, shouldn't I?
Well, today, I decided I would.
A Theory of Practical Fandom to Fashion Influences in Everyday Styles, In Addition to a Semi-Comprehensive Fashion Review of The Third & Fourth Doctors, written & compiled by miss Sunday, in Her Sheer & Utter Madness.*
i. inspiration & theory
Inspiration for today's style was purely Doctor Who. Classic Doctor Who, that is, since it's become my obsession-within-an-obsession lately. Specifically, my main influences were the Fourth Doctor & my newest (& slightly surprising!) style icon, the Third Doctor. Their own styles are quite a contrast, as you're about to see.
THREE
Three, is very clearly, a dandy from head to toe. Three has a preference for more luxurious, opulent fabrics & styles - lots of velvets, silks & ruffles. Also, Three, I find, is more colourful in his fashions in contrast to Four, in addition to being more formal & elegant. Three is very put together, but never particularly looks silly or overdone, even with his cape on - I find his look distinguished, classic & deliciously luxe.
Three often wears capes, both when travelling & sometimes during liaisons with UNIT or other official-type people. The inside of this particular cape appears to be a satin turquoise shade, though it is not immediately easily seen in this cap. Also, his capes appear to either be removable from the jacket (or vest, rather, as far as I can tell) & fastenings part. The longer part of his cape seems be be similar to a Victorian-era driving coat, but with the sleeves removed & the cape portion added on.
Here, the notes I made on the overall structure of Three's cape-coat above are more easily visible. Also, on a closer view, the entirety of the coat itself appears to be lined in the same turquoise satin as the underside of the cape portion.
Here, Three's outfit is much more visible & better seen. As stated earlier, Three has a tendency to lean toward very lush styles, as seen in the velvet jacket, the ruffled shirt & the tie. The colour scheme is simple, but nonetheless well executed. The jacket's fastenings put me in mind of Asian-style housecoats, though the jacket's style itself strikes me as more late 1800s, or the very early turn of the century, which, I think (& if I remember correctly) would line up with the Asian influences in the fastenings.
Here, the colour & fabric of Three's tie is made clear. It is not black, as one might assume, but rather a burgundy colour, or at least something from the family of wine colours. I think it contrasts nicely with the brighter colour of his jacket & looks quite nice against his shirt. The fabric, is, of course, velvet, as one may come to expect from the Third Doctor. I rather dislike this particular style of tie; it looks too much like Two's bow tie, but perhaps more chic & more serious. I honestly prefer him in the cravat, but that's merely my own feelings on the matter.
Not the best quality of cap & I do apologise, but here, we have a side view of Three. As far as I can tell, his pants are more of a simple style, but still fairly fancy looking. I had thought earlier, whilst capping this episode, that they too might have been velvet, but from what I can see here, they are not.
Here, Three continues to keep a similar colour palette, but spices things up considerably with a purple cape. When I first saw him in this, honestly, the cape was the first thing I noticed, followed by his jacket & his shirt. The cape could be seen as perhaps being a bit too much, but with someone with such a confident, bold personality like Three has, I think he pulls it off well. Though, I'd like to point out, he does not keep this cape for the entire story. In fact, I think he only has five or so scenes with it on.
As said above, Three seems to have abandoned his purple cape in favour of a much more elegant red one. I personally, am absolutely in love with this pairing of the red cape & the navy blue jacket & black pants, I really am. I think it's a much better look on Three & makes him look insanely more elegant than the previous outfit did, as well as ever so slightly sexier. This is one of my favourite outfits of his, out of everything I've seen him wearing so far. He looks stunning in such colours, don't you think?
FOUR
Four has a more bohemian, relaxed, comfortable style. Familiar aspects of Four's style involves a bit of layering, a bit more in the way of accessories & less emphasis on a formal, put together look, as opposed to Three. Four's styles combine elements of formality, even bordering on a formal look, but always, there is just a little bit missing to keep it from being a fully formal, completely categorized look. Four has, what I would call, a very Annie Hall look & what I would consider fairly iconic, even without the scarf, though of course, that helps a bit!
Here, Four's layers are nicely visible: jacket, sweater & button-up. Also here can be seen the mishmash of patterns in Four's first choice of clothes post-regeneration. This can be a tricky area of playing about with fashion - mix the wrong sorts of patterns, wear one coloured pattern next to another & you could blind someone. (see the fashion choices of the Sixth Doctor - that could give a woman vertigo if she stares too long at him!) However, Four keeps his patterns & the colours of them fairly simple - granted argyle & checks can make one a little dizzy, but the colour range both shirt & sweater are in complement each other well enough to a certain degree & can be considered an acceptable pairing.
Here, Four's accessories are a bit more visible: TARDIS key, smaller scarf & his bigger scarf. Personally, I find that his smaller scarf is a pleasant contrast to the rest of his outfit. It breaks up the colour scheme of more earthy, grounding colours but doesn't draw too much unneeded attention to itself. I also think it contrasts well with his shirt, but perhaps not so much with his sweater. His larger scarf goes well with his jacket & interestingly enough, as one's eye travels down each side of his scarf, it can be noted that each stripe contrasts fairly well with the part of his outfit next to it. Basically, look down, then across the front of his sweater & you'll hopefully see what I mean, unless I'm the only one who sees such things.
Please excuse the poor cap, but it's one of the very few ones I had where we had a decent look at Four up & down & can see what's under the jacket, sweater, shirt & double scarves, so to speak. While I'm not one hundred percent certain, I'd venture to say his pants are tweed, or something similar - perhaps a bit of wool, or maybe a blend? I suppose it's up to the viewer to decide. I'm not overly fond of the pants personally, but then again I abhor tweed altogether, save for blazers & jackets - it just seems like it would be so rough & uncomfortable against one's skin. Though I will say that these particular pants, at least in my opinion, are a perfect complement to his overall look. While I did say earlier that Four's overall style (save for his outfits in Shada & The Talons of Weng Chiang, both of which I do not have caps, of sadly) is of a bohemian, rough-around-the-edges sort of look, I also find that at times, his style can border on an eccentric academic look. Here, his style can go either way - bohemian or an eccentric academic.
Also of note & not seen in the first caps are that Four's sweater has small pockets in the front & that he seems to have a pocket watch in one of them. (I surmise it to be a pocket watch, since he wears his TARDIS key around his neck, but I could be wrong.)
Here, all the pieces come together to complete a full travelling outfit. Four's overcoat continues to follow the same colour scheme as the rest of his outfit, though now his red jacket is the centerpiece of his overall look. The whole look, I feel, is complemented nicely by his scarf, which matches everything very well on the upper half. The bottom half of his scarf is brighter & more colourful & stands out on its own, without clashing with everything he has on top.
ii. application
Applying Four-esque & somewhat unexpectedly, Three-esque aspects into an everyday outfit actually proved easier that I'd thought - putting together one outfit based on one solid influence can be a bit tough, especially if the majority of your clothes don't fit what your aesthetic of that particular outfit aims to be. I hadn't planned on incorporating any Three sort of styles into this outfit at all, but once I had all the pieces assembled on my bed, I realised it played to both aesthetics & somewhat nicely as well.
As I got dressed, I realised that subconsciously (or perhaps just by sheer happenstance), each half of my outfit represented one of their aesthetics, as you're about to see.
This was the full outfit I wore.
(not shown: black opaque tights & black mid-length boots)
The coat, skirt, tank top (which is barely visible under the white shirt) & jacket are all things I had in my closet for years & came from the Gap, all as gifts. (I detest the Gap, in all honesty, but in gifts, you have no say) The jacket technically belongs to my mother, though it was originally mine.
The top half, including the jacket, is all Three-inspired aesthetic - I played to his penchant for ruffles & formal dress shirts, as well as his fondness for capes. The tank top was not so much a part in either style, but as my own touch: the white shirt is considerably sheer & one cannot wear the proper undergarments under it without inadvertently flashing them at someone if you stand in direct light. Also, it was considerably cool while I was out, so the top underneath doubled as a second layer to keep me a bit warmer.
The shirt was originally supposed to be worn in a more Four-esque style (though I've seen Three in it as well, so it would have worked out in either case) with the collar entirely around my neck & a sort of cravat-style tie around it. However, the collar, as I found, does not stay up in such a way, rather it fans out around your neck, making the wearer look like their head is popping out of a fan, or a flower. In retrospect, I could have perhaps tried my hand at wearing the cravat anyway, as it might have kept the collar up, but parts of it still would have fallen down, most likely, plus I was running a bit late, so I let it slide.
Instead, I wore the shirt off the shoulder, with the sleeves going down past my hands & the back & front of the shirt nearly eclipsing my skirt. Not entirely playing to my aesthetic, but I reasoned that if Three had regenerated as a girl, he would have perhaps done the same.
The skirt, along with the tights & boots, played to the Four aesthetic - patterns & solid, strong, simple sorts of colours. My boots, however, I feel, were a bit too high fashion for a Four aesthetic -
more Jo Grant, or even more Liz Shaw than anything the Doctor might have worn. Still, they went well with the skirt & had enough of a Four-esque style for me to go with it. (the bottom half of this outfit was modeled on what he wore in Destiny of the Daleks.)
This was what the outfit would have looked like without the top layer - I feel it would have been passably Four-esque, if I paired it with one of my longer coats & my hat.
(also, in addition to being a more practical layer, I wore this underneath so that if I got so sick of that top, I could just yank it off & have something suitable for public viewing underneath.)
iii. reflections & afterthoughts.
Overall, for an early attempt, I think it came out rather well. It was really an accidental outfit - I hadn't planned on incorporating both of their styles into a single outfit, but where I lacked more pieces for one look, the other filled in the gaps most admirably. How very Three Doctors-esque, no?
Pros: I loved the skirt, tights & boots. I think those are very classically Four. (well, minus the skirt, of course, but I think you get my general meaning.) I may try a second version of this outfit out in the near future, without the white shirt & with a longer coat & my hat. That is also a very Four look, I think.
Cons: I HATED THAT FUCKING WHITE SHIRT. Not only is it hard to wear, but apparently, the elastic wore out in the cuffs of the sleeves, making them look incredibly shapeless around my wrists. I have no idea how that could have happened, because I have never worn this shirt & up until a few weeks ago, considered it lost entirely. Also, it did not stay off my shoulders & I had to hold onto the sleeves to keep it down. & with my hair down & that damn shirt on, I thought I looked like a very poor (& very misplaced) version of Eight. It was not funny. That shirt won't be seeing the light of day for a bit, I think.
caps: by myself in VLC Media Player. You're welcome to take them, but please credit me.
Episodes capped: The Three Doctors, The Claws of Axos (the Third Doctor), Robot & The Ark in Space (the Fourth Doctor).
*the title of this, obviously, is not meant to be taken seriously. I just thought it sounded cute. Have some fun please!
