WHO: Yu Kanda and Lenalee Lee
WHAT: Lenalee, still not quite believing Kanda is home and safe, pays him a vist
WHERE: Kanda's bedroom
WHEN: Night, Day 27 or thereabouts
Lenalee woke up in the middle of the night, her stomach in knots.
It took her a long minute to orient herself to reality, since reality had shifted around her over and over so crazily in the last month or so. Body, her own. Surroundings, still Rivelata. Kanda . . .
The images repeated themselves in her head again of Kanda lying on the couch, being attended to by a doctor, looking near-death. She thought for sure she was going to lose him that night. Part of her still couldn't believe that she hadn't.
She had to see with her own eyes, make sure he was all right.
Getting out of bed, she tiptoed down the hall, the too-big nightgown that had belonged to a previous resident of this house billowing behind her like a vapor trail. She put her hand on the doorknob, hesitated just a second, then turned and pushed.
He was lying on the bed, long hair spread all around him, eyes closed, looking peaceful. Almost angelic. And not that different than he did when they were children and she used to come to his room in the middle of the night, unable to go to sleep after another nightmare about the Fallen, and the bad man with the mustache, and the people who tied her to the bed and called her crazy when she tried to talk about what she'd seen.
It gave her such comfort to go to sleep next to him, even if he didn't wake up.
Acting on instict, she did now what she used to do then. She closed the door behind her, walked over to the bed and slid under the covers.
