Edward watched Bella as she began to ramble on and on once more. He wanted to stop her from talking, so she could calm down, but he decided tat maybe it was best to let her get it out, as much as he hated hearing that mongrels name. Squeezing her hand lightly, and finding it easier than usual and this he didn’t mind(though it unnerved him), he leaned forward to kiss her forehead. “Calm down, Bella.
“It’s alright. As long as they are not here, I am sure they are perfectly safe. It is you, I think, that we should be worrying about, Bella.” He put a hand on her arm gently, rubbing her arm softly. “Alice, Esme and the others will take care of whoever is not here, Bella. And I will take care of you, here.” He didn’t know how well that would work, though. He wasn’t nearly as fast, and he wasn’t nearly as strong. He didn’t know how he would achieve anything in his state…
“Please, just relax, Bella. Everything will be fine.” He leaned forward, leaning his forehead against Bella’s as he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. “Please don’t worry, Bella.”
"No fair.." she protested weakly, her other hand coming up to rest against his chest. She glanced up at the sky quickly before her gaze drifted back towards Edward's face. The sky was a bright blue and judging from what she'd seen of the topography, she'd put them somewhere in the Caribbean: lots of sun, lots of green.
Wait.
Lots of sun?
She took a step back from Edward, hands on her hips. Her eyes narrowed in careful scrutiny. "Why aren't you sparkling? Aren't you supposed to sparkle? And you're not as cold! Do vampires run fevers?"
What was this place? Something on it is powerful enough to make Edward feel the effects...
A small smile crossed his lips at Bellas' dizzy reaction, and he put a hand on the small of her back just in case she fell. He wouldn't put it past her. He'd seen her collapse(and even faint) plenty of times from simple things.
When she pulled back, Edward rose a brow, confused, until she spoke. Of course she'd have noticed. He sighed, brushing a hand through his hair. "I don't know, Bella. This hasn't happened before." Pause. "And no, we don't run fevers."
He reached out to take her hand softly. "I still do 'sparkle'. It's just almost unnoticable. All my senses are diluted... I can't even smell you from standing this close." He frowned softly, threading their fingers together. "There's no effort not to break you. I don't even have that strength." Which could be looked at as good, but he didn't know how he'd handle hunting, then.
"Come on, Bella. Someone said there is an inn close by. We should go see if we can find it, and maybe get you something to eat, on the way."
"Is everything weakened? How are you going to hunt?" she asked warily. "If your sparkles are that toned down, I can't even imagine what kind of hit your other senses took."
Bella should have been concerned. She should have been very very concerned but all she could think about was how close to equal they were now. They were actually within the realm of an actual, functioning couple for once. And no one even had to 'lose their soul', as Edward, who was slightly prone to melodrama, put it. Not that I'm any better, Bella snarked at herself.
"Are you even thirsty? Maybe...maybe the island turned you human?"
He could tell, just by looking at her, what she was thinking. He’d been around her long enough to tell these sorts of things, most of the time, without having to need his special ability - which didn’t even work on her, anyways. “They took quite a hit,” He replied.
Edward wanted to be glad. He wanted to happy that he wouldn’t break her now, but he couldn’t shake the fact that like this, he couldn’t protect her. The clumsy one who, if not for him, would have met her untimely end not long after she’d moved to Forks.
It still unnerved him how she could ask such questions so calmly.
“I am. And the book…” He frowned, glancing over at where it lay on the ground. “If I were human, I wouldn’t have had to move away from it.” Edward lightly pulled Bella’s hand up to his face, pressing his lips to her wrist, so the vein was just under his nose, where he could smell her blood. Smell her. “And this wouldn’t drive me insane.”
"And just how do you expect to be able to kill irritable grizzlies without being Superman?" Bella persevered, pulling away her wrist, being the mature one and resisting his advances while there were matters to be discussed. She was actually rather proud.
Her face fell almost imperceptibly when he mentioned that he was still thirsty and still tempted. She wanted so much to be able to be there for him, to suffer through this with him. But that was her. Always getting the easy job: sit pretty, Bella. She hated the way everyone treated her like she was glass all the time. She wasn't! Even Edward, back when he had his Jake Crisis, was overbearing and protective and when would she ever be strong enough to be protective of someone?
As she pulled away, he frowned. Well, obviously, trying to change this topic here was not going to work. He threaded his fingers with hers as he bent over to pick up their journals. He turned, leading her away from the park and towards where he assumed was the inn. They’d need a place to stay for the night.
“The same way I did before, Bella.” He shot a smile in her direction. Just hopefully nothing would happen. He was pretty sure nothing would, but this was a foreign world - who knew what would happen. He looked down at Bella, squeezing her hand softly. “This will all be alright, Bella.”

When would she stop being so damn weak?
