Even before he could stop himself, he had spoken those words to that curious boy. People should not get too close to him, it could throw a wrench in the plans he was making on the island. He'd already consented to that Bridget girl, but that was because she was just too stubborn to let him go. As for Grell and that strange native Jam, they were part of his plot so they were necessary.

At the very least, he can judge whether this boy was worth his time or not, IF that boy could ever make it through the jungle.
