[He's managed to convince - convince, blackmail, what's the difference, really? - Ed into coming with him, but they make an odd sort of sight: Al all beaming smiles and Ed a glowering cloud next to him. Still, Al's glad to be back with his brother after all that time away, even if it means coming back to a place he...hasn't been entirely fond of in recent times.
The festival atmosphere's helping, though.
He takes a deep breath of the perfumed air and lets it back out in a happy sigh.]
It's been a long time since the city's looked this beautiful, hasn't it, Brother?
[Not Pleased To Be There is a little bit of an understatement. He would really rather be at the house, but as many times as he argues this, he loses the battle. Because as far as Al is concerned, he did sort of destroy the house.
A little bit.
And apparently suffering one night of this is going to make Al stop rubbing it in, so maybe it's a fair deal. Maybe. But he's not gonna sit through it merrily.]
How the hell would I know...? This place is stupid, and that's all I've ever seen of it.
[Al refuses to be deterred. Instead, he steers Ed towards those tables of food, thinking it might make him a little more amiable to have a full stomach.
Well, either that or he'll just fall asleep somewhere.]
You might see more of it if you didn't spend all your time cooped up in the house or the library.
[...Alright, maybe Al knows him a bit too well. Though he's not gonna admit what he could go for some apple pie. Maybe. A small slice. But he can live with this a little better if theres food. After all, he has one hell of an appetite. ]
What else is there to see? Forest, forest, old building, ocean, ocean, old building. Boring.
[Small slice. Right. By Ed's definition, Al will be surprised if he doesn't take the whole pie.]
There's plenty to see. All kinds of shops and people and animals - oh! And Mi-...Ba'ast was introducing me to all kinds of local wildlife on that island we found.
[He does his best to hide that little slip-up, and the flush that spreads determinedly over his cheeks. Maybe if he just turns his attention to that cake over here...]
[ He doesn't even notice the slip up, mostly because mentioning her irritates him because as far as he's concerned, she's still insane. ]
Yeah, yeah, Great. Then why are we here? Why not go back to studying your crazy wildlife.
[ An irritated face as he gets himself a drink. ]
I was attacked by a Macaw, Al. A fucking Macaw. And that was the least of my worries during that stupid storm. I've seen enough wildlife here. Already.
[Al makes a face, too - though his is more a little disappointed twist of the lips.]
It hasn't been...normal, lately. But it looks like things are calming down now, and what better time to get a real look at what the city's actually like?
It's not fair to judge a place by its worst times.
[ He sighs, and the outright irritated look on his face drains. Slightly. He knows he's bothering Al, or upsetting him, one or the other or even both. So he gives up. But that doesn't mean he's really changed his opinion on the crazy wildlife.
Not that that's really going to stop him from doing anything like those dangerous ideas that creep into his mind now and then. ]
[That's enough for Al - he knows that in Ed-speak, actions count for a lot more than words, and that slight draining of the irritation across his expression counts for a lot.
And as far as those dangerous ideas go, Al doesn't even want to know.]
Good.
[He lets his gaze sweep over the assembled guests - some of them natives and some of them Offworlders (a fact that comforts him more than he can say) - and then looks back at Ed with a very decisive glance.]
Then I think the next thing on our agenda is to introduce ourselves to all the newcomers.
[ A groan escapes his throat, even around the mouthful of juice that he quickly swallows. Meeting newcomers? On his agenda? If it was anywhere on there, it was way down on the bottom of the list...]
I think you're confusing our agendas. I think that's on yours.
[ Because he could really care less. Half of these people were crazy, anyways. ]
[Al gives him a disapproving look, but it's rather weak - he'd been fairly certain Ed was going to protest, but Al's always thought it's exciting, meeting new people.
And...well, nearly everyone they've known has gone - disappeared, or worse - and Al has to admit that he misses the constant company of friends.]
Come on, Brother - half of these people have probably already been in our house as customers, and we don't even know their names! What's wrong with meeting some new people?
[ He sighs. He's really good at putting Al down, he notices. At least, right now. ]
Would you stop looking so miserable? I'm going to go back to the house if you don't stop. [ He looks at him almost accusingly. If he has to be dragged around this festival, it's not going to be by a miserable Al. ]
[Oh, 'cause that's going to help the whole 'looking miserable' thing. Still, with all the effort it took to get Ed out here in the first place, Al does his best to look...slightly less disapproving.]
All right, all right. What do you want to do, then?

[He stifles a yawn with his hand, looking over at Al like the boy is crazy.]
Why are we going to sit around making friends with every person on this island? I'd rather try and get home, really.

Having friends somewhere doesn't mean you can never leave.
