Rei lifted her head when she heard the knock at the door. She'd been asleep in a chair beside the bed, arms crossed on the mattress as a makeshift pillow for her head, one hand laced delicately with Minako's. The medical equipment here was crude at best, and all they had attached to Minako was an IV of saline hanging from the head of the bed in a glass jar.
"Lelouch-kun," Rei yawned, slowly sitting up. She rubbed a bit of sleep out of one of her eyes. "Sorry, I stayed here last night."
He smiled lightly, and as he moved closer, he tried hard not to remember too vividly how Nunnally had looked in the days and weeks after their mother was assassinated as she lay in the hospital, unseeing and crippled.
"If anything, I should apologize for disturbing you."
As quietly as possible, he pulled up a seat to sit beside Rei, setting down the basket between them.
"I can't say I'm surprised. I imagined the clinic food wasn't very good, so I thought I'd make you something."
Lelouch smiled back lightly, sounding a little nostalgic as he bent down to open the basket to show her.
"I was always the one who did all the cooking for the Student Council; everyone else refused to properly measure ingredients to the third significant number. I suspect the practice cooking is part of the reason I ended up starting an eatery.
"I picked up a few recipes for the local dishes, but I'm still perfecting those, so for now, I thought some traditional Japanese cuisine might be suitable."
Within the basket are a pair of well-packed bento filled more or less to the brim.
