Selene's patrols were doubling in length since Jenny's death. She hadn't known the girl personally, but the manner of her death left a bad taste in Selene's mouth. It wasn't so much the display, as the fact that a good chunk of her visceral organs were simply missing. She'd seen it too often for her liking back in her own world, she didn't intend to let it happen very often in this one.
Shortly after nightfall, she would leave her veritable fortress at the edge of the forest to strike out into the night alone. She preferred it this way. It reminded her of hunting in the city, tracking down the lycans and gunning them to death before they could bat an eye. It was bracing...
Ah, but here was a familiar face. Selene knelt on the edge of the roof, dark eyes watching the man carefully as he made his way back home for the evening. A crooked smirk graced the edge of her lips. He was growing his hair out again. He really did look so much like Michael...
Selene dropped from the roof as he passed, closing the short distance between them to grab his shoulder with one hand and steer him straight into a wall, pinning him across the shoulderblades with her forearm. Her knee moved to dig into the small of his back and keep him in place as she leaned forward, cool breath feathering across his neck as she spoke.
It was too quick, but he could still act on instinct. Youji bumped into the wall and jerked, trying to get her to lose her grip. His hand was close enough to his watch to reach the trigger when he heard that soft voice behind him.
"Hell of a way to great a guy, Selene," he said, arm dropping from his weapon briefly. "Whatever happened to handshakes or hugs?"
"Not my style," she responded briefly. She wasn't precisely a delicate little flower, after all; that much should have been clear from the very start. 'You're a tigress, it sickens me to see you so tame,' Jade had once said of her.
It was another few moments before she let her knee fall away from his back, and loosened her grip on his shoulders. She backed away a few paces and crossed her arms. "I should have figured you for the sort to come to this place..."
Turning around, Youji smoothed down his coat and gave Selene a once-over. "Are you surprised, really? What else am I supposed to do? Besides worry myself sick over the kiddo." Although Omi wasn't really a kid, he'd always sort of been one in Youji's mind. "Disappearing and reappearing like that. Enough to drive you insane." Worse than Aya.
His head tilted to the side and he studied her expression. "Why, you disapprove of this sort of thing? It was just a little gambling tonight. Gotta pay the rent, after all."
The weather was starting to get unbearable again after the relative cooldown of the winter months, and Selene had started hunting in her corset again. And of course, with those impossibly tight pants, that 'once-over' gave Youji quite an eyefull.
"Not that I disapprove," she said shortly, glancing down the alleyway briefly. "Everyone has their crutches. I'd simply have my suspicions about where else those women have been."
Selene turned her gaze back to Youji, tilting her chin up a bit. "You're only human, after all. I'd hate to see you come into an unfortunate disease."
The effort wasn't lost on him. With a tiny smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth, he gave a helpless shrug.
"Nice to know someone's worried about me. Like I said, I got lucky tonight, but not in that sense." Youji patted his pocket for emphasis.
Shoving his hands into those pockets, he looked into her eyes. "Haven't seen much of you lately, in any case. Not like I've been that social much myself."
Selene quirked a brow, glancing back down the alley momentarily as she commented dryly. "Well, we don't precisely frequent the same entertainment venues, do we?"
It was all well and good to joke about, but it was a rare thing for Selene to do anything purely for entertainment. She was a strictly mission-oriented sort, and once she'd fixed her mind on something, that was her task at hand come hell or high water. In fact, the last time she'd truly enjoyed herself was when her dear Jade was still alive.
Maybe she could do with a bit of indulgence.
"Though I'm sure you've been positively pining for me." Her sarcasm was poorly-concealed.
They didn't really frequent the same anything. Youji had mainly talked to Selene over the journals, more than personal hanging out time. Well, relationships came in all forms.
"Of course, babe." The words rolled off of his tongue so smoothly. Youji wouldn't deny it; Selene was a pretty woman. He also knew she had a dangerous side - sadly like the majority of women he knew.
"Think I'm on to you now. Don't worry, it's very hard to resist my charms." He punctuated that with a wink.
Selene couldn't help rolling her eyes at that. Oh, she was so out of practice with this flirting thing... Was she flirting? She didn't think she could flirt if she tried. But that comment reminded her so strongly of Kraven that she had to suppress a vile shudder.
But then she brought her gaze to his face again, and... good lord, was she really so shallow?
"I don't think you're quite as charming as you assume," Selene tucked a bit of hair behind her ear as she began to stride away again. "But I'll need someone to drink with tonight. You're free to join me."
Youji tried to pretend her comment hurt. "I think you underestimate me, miss," he joked back, but he followed at a decent pace. "Though I am very much up for alcohol. Where to?"
"My apartment," she explained shortly. Though perhaps he was getting some cheeky ideas, so she decided to elaborate. "My late roommate collected quite a few things, alcohol among them."
And guns. Lots of guns and ammunition, right next to all the booze. Where had Jade even gotten all of it? Were those the perks of being on the council? All the wine and guns you could possibly want?
It wasn't far from that seedier part of town; her 'apartment' was an old warehouse, refurbished on the upper levels into five apartments. All but one were currently unoccupied. Selene slipped a key from within her bust and opened the large padlock on the door, pushing it open to motion Youji inside.
"Up the stairs, last door in the hallway. I'll be up in a moment..."
Uh huh. Go back to the apartment and get wasted? This was starting to sound better and better. Youji followed willingly to the warehouse. He might have watched a little too intently when she retrieved her key, but he quickly averted his eyes before she could notice.
Selene had simply been trying to spare him the awkwardness of waiting for her to lock the door again, but that was done quickly enough. She simply thought he would be leading the way, and directions might be helpful.
"Can't be away from me for a moment?" She asked dryly, beckoning him with one hand as she led the way up the spiral staircase to the lofts. One long hallway later, they were at her door, which remained unlocked for now -- until she could find tenants for the other apartments.
It was clear that the interior once had a wide, beautiful view of the port, with more windows extending out to the jungle. However, these had been painted over -- thickly -- with black lacquer. No light passed, and what were once windows now had a shiny thick shell, bordered by endless bookshelves. The occupational hazards of being a vampire. But it was spacious, with a small kitchenette in one corner, and a hallway off to one side; plush couches and armchairs surrounded the central hearth.
Selene closed the door behind them and tossed her key on a table by the door, wandering off to a cabinet in the corner and bending to dig through the lower reaches.
"Traps?" Selene asked, retrieving a large bottle of fine sangria and a couple long wine flutes. "Dear Youji, if I wanted to kill you, you'd already be dead."
Something about the way she said it, in that posh British accent, marked it with an almost chilling certainty.
Her boots clicked softly on the wood floor as she moved across the room to turn up a few oil lamps lining the walls. She had no trouble moving about in complete darkness, but she had a feeling it posed a bit of a problem for her companion.
She took a seat on one of the plush couches, motion for Youji to sit as well as she uncorked the bottle and portioned out the drink.
"Well, I guess I'll take comfort in that, then," he mumbled, browsing her book collection while she got out the wine.
Youji turned around and saw Selene sitting on the couch, and placed himself next to her, casually brushing his fingers against hers when he took his glass.
Bringing the glass to his lips, he smirked just a little at her. Youji well understood what was going on, and he was ready.

"Do you prefer bitter, or sweet?"

Walking upstairs, he saw her interior decorating attempts and raised an eyebrow. However, Youji said nothing. He knew when to keep his mouth shut.
Finally, the good part! He smirked. "Oh, I prefer them sweet."
