Rei left the house early the morning of Valentine's Day. It was too early, really. The sky was still dark, only just coloring gray as the sun began to creep over the horizon. The birds were singing already, and it was clear that this was going to be another beautiful day. It was always a beautiful day in this place though, always perfect -- too perfect, really. In all honesty, it was fairly disturbing to Rei most of the time.
Rei's concern today was not the perfect weather, however. She made her necessary stops quickly, knowing that it was Saturday, knowing that Minako would be sleeping in, yet not wanting to risk it should she wake early. It was nearly 8 by the time Rei returned home, toting a large box with a few packages stacked on top.
With her arms still loaded, Rei crept up the stairs and into Minako's room. The girl slept like a rock, really. There was no risk, unless she was already awake. And she wasn't. Grinning and praising whatever deity was allowing her good luck today, she knelt on the floor and placed the parcels down. The first, smaller box contained three pink-frosted cupcakes with chocolates places on top, as well as crystal-sprinkled sugar cookies -- gifts courtesy Penelo's Bakery. The larger box, however, contained something quite a bit more delicate.
Rei lifted out of the box, a tiny, slumbering kitten. It was purring loudly as she cradled it against her stomach, carefully toting it over to place it on the empty pillow beside where Minako slept. It was scarcely larger than palm-size, pure white with sleepy blue eyes that sank closed again as soon as Rei set him down. Around his neck was a little blue collar, with a golden crescent moon hanging from it.
Rei left the box of sweets on Minako's bedside table, along with a little handwritten note:
'His name is Apollo. He was begging me to come home and be with you. Happy Valentine's Day! ♥, Rei-chan
Rei took the box she'd brought the kitten in, and quietly sneaked back to her own bedroom.
