Lily was so good. Lily always had been so good. Even if she was completely frightening and a little overbearing for Remus at times, she was nevertheless a good person when you stripped away that facade of intimidation. She knew him well despite the fact that he had never tried, and he was closer to her now than he ever thought he would be. He was still young compared to her, a year behind at least. Perhaps that had something to do with it, perhaps in that year he'd lost somehow, he and Lily had known each other better. It hurt his head to try and fathom that just now, though...
"I..." Remus' voice was cracking. He swallowed hard, trying to find the words and the courage within himself to continue. "I'm sorry I wasn't... wasn't here for you more when James..."
James. He was gone too. He and Sirius were probably together now, wherever they were; whether they went back to Hogwarts, or to whatever afterlife this place had to offer. They were together, making mischief and having fun, and that's how Sirius would want it. Even if he pretended to be happy stuck here with Remus and Lily, the sad truth of it was that Sirius Black was nothing without James Potter.
Sirius was happier with James. And Remus had to bite his lip to hold back the sob that thought evoked.
