Remus felt as if he'd been wandering the town and jungle for days, and there was good reason for that. It was two days since he'd left the house, two days of desperately searching, frantically running through every back alley and falling into every forest clearing. He hadn't returned home all that time.
It was Sunday night when he finally slunk back into the house. He slipped in quietly, and leaned back against the door as it closed. Brown eyes were fixed on the carpet, hands curling into loose, trembling fists at his side. Beneath those floorboards was a bedroom -- their bedroom -- and a bed that he would have to sleep in alone tonight; tonight and Merlin only knew how much longer. It would still smell like him, the mattress would still remember his familiar shape, there were probably a few strands of dark hair still clinging to the pillows. But Remus would sleep alone. Because Sirius was gone, taken by whatever force continued to tear people to and from this island.
And he'd left Remus alone.
Lupin sank to the floor, pressing his hands to his head as it hung behind his bent knees. His fingers closed into tight fists around his dirty blond curls. He was shaking, his face felt hot. There was so much Remus had given to him, so much he still had to give... he never even got the chance to tell Sirius that he...
Finally, after days of holding it back, a loud sob echoed through the foyer, followed by a shuddering gasp.
