Remus jumped slightly as she leaned against him. He'd heard her walking into the room, sensed her kneeling beside him, but the touch was still a surprise. But he couldn't even bring himself to move. The heaviness in his chest stabbed at him, and he could feel the pain of it right down into his fingertips. He'd never felt pain like this before... this agony that crippled him so that he could not even will himself to lift his arms to hug Lily.

Was this how she'd felt? Had this pain consumed here when James and Harry left? When they disappeared, like Sirius, into a nothing place? Deadened, limbs lifeless, numb to every emotion but the sadness? How could he have turned a blind eye to pain like that? Or was she simply better at hiding it?

Remus leaned forward, and his legs fell to the side. His arms felt heavy as they came around Lily's shoulders, tugging her against his chest and hanging his head onto her shoulder. The tears were hot, wet, and they wouldn't stop coming, streaming down his face, deviating across the deep crevices of his scars.

Who else would love a face like this? Who else could? That thought redoubled his wracking sobs, shaking his entire scrawny frame.
