Kaoru hadn't quite asked for help, but Kurama couldn't help wanting to be there early to lend whatever aid he could - and even if Kaoru didn't need help setting up, he could at least add to the atmosphere, right? Flex his powers a bit and leave the backyard and whatever floral decorations they might be using looking full and fresh?
So he made his way to Eagle's Splendor, his arms full of assorted fresh flowers - might as well give Kaoru some things to choose from, as well as conserve a little bit of energy, not growing plants straight from seeds - and dressed in one of the finer tunics the Hitachiins had designed for him, a deep yellow trimmed in green.
He shifted the flowers in his arms carefully to free one hand long enough to knock on the front door and announce his presence.
"Kaoru? Hikaru?" he called. "I hope I'm not intruding..."
It was, Kurama supposed, rather odd that he was now closer to Kaoru than to Hikaru, given that he had suffered through the kidnapping and subsequent rescue with Hikaru. But Kaoru seemed to be the more personable of the two, the more outgoing, and Kurama had gotten more familiar with him because of it.
Which, of course, was not to say that he was any less fond of Hikaru, nor any less protective. So he returned the smile easily and sidled into the shop.
It was also not particularly strange to him that he could tell them apart. Spend enough time with a pair of twins, and you started to see the subtle differences - and there were plenty between the Hitachiins. Hikaru was immediately identifiable as he opened the door.
"Thank you, Hikaru," Kurama said honestly, stepping inside and turning to hold his arms out, presenting the flowers.
"The two of you didn't really ask for anything, but I thought I might offer some help? At least, in the way of fresh flowers and such - it's the least I can do."
Again, Kurama found himself returning the smile easily, though a part of him rose up in a hidden anger at the people who had allowed such a kind-hearted and obviously gentle boy suffer through what he had suffered through - including Kurama himself.
"It's no trouble at all," he said. "And I'm happy to do it.
"But," he continued, sobering a bit as he slipped into a business persona, leaning forward a bit to let his hands hover over the flowers Hikaru was holding, "I'll need to know what sort of atmosphere you want. What kind of look. Is there something in these you think might fit well, or did you have something else in mind? I can assure you that I can probably provide most varieties of plants, so feel free to pick what you'd like."
He didn't know how much Hikaru knew about his powers, so he kept silent on that topic, willing to let Hikaru assume he might need to run back to his shop to fetch more plants, or those he didn't have - but it wasn't far from Eagle's Splendor, so it was a perfectly valid assumption.
Probably no one in Rivelata today would realize just how different a feeling it was for Kaoru to be the 'personable' one, the 'strong' one, the one leading operations... but much like at the school festival back home, Kaoru felt that maybe - just maybe - the change would be for the good. Twins they would always be... but this was the test of how 'identical' they were anymore. After all, a great number of the black outfits on display now had been Hikaru's designs from the early days after his capture... there was a reason they were so dark and conservative in comparison to the more outlandish and colorful designs, a great number of which had been Kaoru's contribution
( ... )
Kurama gave Kaoru a warm smile as he ran up - and this felt natural, too, the way he had taken Kaoru under his wing as alternately a pupil and a little brother, depending on the situation.
"Quite the undertaking," he observed idly, inclining his head slightly as he looked around at all the decorations going up, the displays of designs. "But I'm sure it will be wonderful."
He hoped so, at least. The two deserved something nice, after everything they'd been through.
And, he thought, eyes hardening a bit, if anything should happen, I will personally make sure that the responsible parties pay very dearly.
Kaoru snapped his fingers. "I got it. Cyan. It's been forever since we saw cyan carnations, ne?"
It was Hikaru's favorite color, and the color he'd gotten to use as his Host designation, like Kaoru got to use orange.
"So if you wanna head out back, we can take care of all that stuff - plus show you what all I managed to arrange back there." The grin would have given Kaoru away even if Kurama hadn't already been able to tell the twins apart - that backyard had been Kaoru's pet project for so long... he needed it to continue training. He knew that - if nothing else - if he didn't keep practicing what he already knew, there was no way he'd get to learn anything more, from Shuuichi, from Clark, from Max and her brother, from Agrias... anyone.
Kurama hummed softly, returning the grin - and understanding the subtle message behind it - reaching over to the flowers in Hikaru's arms and pulling a single blossom of the proper color - a carnation, in fact.
"Just the carnations, then?" he asked, and leaned in again, pulling a sprig of forget-me-nots and a single morning glory to show the twins. "Or would you like some variety? Admittedly, these are not quite cyan..."
He trailed off, thinking. Now, wasn't there...? Yes, I'm almost sure...
One of his hands rose absently to his hair, feeling for a particular seed, and when he found it, he let his hand fall away, a smile on his face.
"We can head out back while you decide," he said calmly, wondering if Kaoru would understand.
Kurama laughed in response, but there was a bit of an edge to it - Best, perhaps, to remind him who he's dealing with here, he mused, though he wasn't above admitting that there was a little bit of self-satisfaction that came from some...not-so-subtle displays of his power.
"Agreed," he said, almost to himself, drawing the seed he'd found from his hair and letting it roll into his palm. There, he pushed with his energy, forcing a bright bloom, the flower cupped in his palm, the leaves and roots winding about his hands and down his arm.
"Much more difficult."
He let his eyes lift from the flower to Kaoru's face, dark and more than a little challenging. Remember? his eyes said. How the last session turned out? I haven't even hit half-power with you yet.
"Cyanocrocus," he murmured, offering up the flower. "I believe it is of the proper color."
Kaoru blinked before stepping forward to take the flower. "That's... geez, you're something else, Shuuichi!" He smiled back, with none of the darkness in Kurama's face. "I can keep pushing myself all I want, but somehow you'll always be cooler."
He let a slightly more serious look come over his face then, though. "I've been trying to talk to a bunch of different people about sparring with them - with weapons, without, anything they're willing to do with me. I think I'm getting better, slowly but surely." He cast a glance back to the shop. "Hikaru hasn't really gotten into it, though. He'd rather play amefuuto with Hiruma-san and Sena and Musashi and them." Kaoru gave a light shrug. "I guess even twins can learn a few specialized skills, right? Nothing wrong with that..." There was a faint sadness in his eyes, but the younger boy blinked and it was gone
( ... )
Kurama blinked in return, before laughing softly. Perhaps not quite the reaction he'd expected, but... There was something so distinctly Kaoru about it, wasn't there?
"Some don't take to martial arts as others do," he said softly, sobering a bit. "You and your brother are very different people, aren't you - despite how similar you appear at first glance?"
He was glad when the sadness left Kaoru's eyes - it was not an expression he enjoyed seeing, nor was it one that fit well with the boy's naturally bright character.
"Either," he answered to Kaoru's question. "It's your party - whatever you think might be best."
It gave Kaoru pause when Shuuichi said that. It's supposed to be our party... Hikaru's and I together, but he's been so distant lately...
"Let's just... go with more variety, then. Anything in the blue spectrum should be good." It would look good alongside the cyan, wouldn't it? "As long as the color's prominent out here."
There was something sad in Kaoru's eyes, but Kurama couldn't have said what it was - instead, he only nodded, returned the smile as best he could, and moved away, pausing for only a moment to lay a gentle, brief hand on Kaoru's shoulder.
As he moved to begin the preparations, he reached up to his hair and withdrew more seeds, instinctively knowing which he wanted - and concentrated his energy, flowers beginning to blossom in his cupped hands.

That way Hikaru can't help but notice... maybe?
