More Than Skin Deep

The internet is a strange place. You know, you meet someone online and they're witty, intelligent, and charming; you just expect them to look as beautiful as their soul reflects on the computer screen. It's completely backwards from seeing someone in real life, where you see a beautiful person, and you talk to them in hopes that they're as cool as they appear on the outside. Often times, in both cases, you are disappointed. The online cat doesn't look or sound like you imagined, or hot girl has a case of the "she was so attractive until the moment she opened her mouth." What bugs me more is the online to real life scenario. Why is it that someone whose character you're so attracted to, this mesmerizing spell is broken the second you a) lay eyes on them, or b) hear them speak over the phone. What foolish mechanism of humanity prioritizes physical beauty (which includes voice) over having a good time with someone, someone who thinks like you, someone you know you can chill with because they are from your tribe. But they ugly, so you don't like them as much. And the pretty boring ppl, we're more willing to forgive them for being boring and mean spirited, because, as Inspector Closeau said about Xantia, "Who cares! She's hot!"
