Once-a-Day Viagra?
Recently, several European studies of PDE5 inhibitors (
Viagra,
Levitra, and Cialis), used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), were published that compared various doses with the traditional "on-demand" dose taken whenever a man expects to engage in sex. The results suggest that there may be benefits to ongoing treatment with these drugs. One trial of
cheap cialis with 411 French men with ED found that a dose taken every three days worked better and was preferred by more men than an on-demand regimen.
Another study compared a daily dose of 10 milligrams (mg) of
Cialis with the traditional on-demand dose of 20 mg. More than 70 percent of the men in this study preferred the once-a-day dosing. Men who did not respond to the normal on-demand dose, responded to a once-daily dose in up to 41 percent of cases. There was no significant difference in side effects between the two groups.
Finally, a third study suggests an actual "cure" in certain groups of men with ED. The study involved young men with psychologically-induced ED and older men with ED who had no evidence of atherosclerosis. Both groups were placed on a 20 mg dose of Cialis, every other day. After three months, 66 percent of the men in both groups recovered their ability to get an erection, while only 16 percent of men with evidence of atherosclerosis typically did so. The men with ED who took 50 mg of Viagra daily for 12 months responded as well as taking the usual on-demand dose. Almost 60 percent of the men in both groups continued to perform at the same levels one month after stopping the drug.
The results of these studies suggest that continuous exposure to PDE5 drugs may protect or even regenerate the endothelial cells in the smooth muscle lining of blood vessels, including those involved in erection. This is very interesting early research that must be confirmed in larger randomized and controlled clinical trials.
